Freshman forward Patrick Kelly scored the lone goal as UMW beat Hampden?Sydney 1?0 in its opener despite playing down a man for 56 minutes after a red card. The Eagles will host Eastern Mennonite Sunday at 1.

Florence George scored the eventual game-winning goal and had an assist in UMW?s season-opening 3?2 win at 16th-ranked Lebanon Valley.

UMW?s men placed fourth and the women fifth at the Salisbury Invitational on Saturday.
Freshman Nick Eghtessad finished eighth (26:58 for 8,000 meters) for the UMW men. Scott Plunkett was 14th (27:16) and Corey Lyons 17th (27:27).
Sophomore Tara Landy was the Eagles? top finisher (11th, 23:21). She was followed by Caroline Cerand in 20th place (23:40).

A new system that automatically streamlines database access patterns can make large Web applications up to three times as fast

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Most major websites these days maintain huge databases: Shopping sites have databases of inventory and customer ratings, travel sites have databases of seat availability on flights, and social-networking sites have databases of photos and comments. Almost any transaction on any of these sites requires multiple database queries, which can slow response time.

This week, at the 38th International Conference on Very Large Databases the premier database conference researchers from MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory presented a new system that automatically streamlines websites' database access patterns, making the sites up to three times as fast. And where other systems that promise similar speedups require the mastery of special-purpose programming languages, the MIT system, called Pyxis, works with the types of languages already favored by Web developers.

Alvin Cheung, a graduate student in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS), is first author on the paper. He's joined by his advisor, EECS professor Sam Madden, and by Owen Arden and Andrew Myers of Cornell University's Department of Computer Science.

A Web-services transaction typically involves both data retrieval say, the flights on a given route with available seats and computation say, whether the difference in flight times would allow the traveler to make a connection. Typically, data is stored on one server, and the computation, or "application logic," is executed on another. The application server and the database might have to exchange information multiple times only to conclude that, no, a given itinerary won't work.

But if a few frequently used chunks of application logic could run on the database server instead, it would save time, by limiting the number of cross-server transactions, and bandwidth, since the sole remaining transaction could be sending the single bit of information "no."

But application logic and database queries are generally written in very different languages, which are optimized to handle different types of operations, so moving code to the database can require not only rewriting it, but also rethinking the way it's implemented. And it's difficult to split a program in two without introducing bugs without, say, losing track of which server needs to modify which variable at which point.

Finally, even if the programmer invests the time to establish that the partitioning of the program won't introduce errors, there's still the difficulty that the demands on the database server are constantly changing. During normal operation, the database server's CPU may have plenty of capacity to handle a little application logic. But a sudden spike in traffic could so burden the CPU that the extra computation puts it over its limit, causing much worse delays than shuttling data between application and database would.

Graphic results

Pyxis solves all three problems. It automatically partitions a program between application server and database server, and it does it in a way that can be mathematically proven not to disrupt the operation of the program. It also monitors the CPU load on the database server, giving it more or less application logic to execute depending on its available capacity.

Pyxis begins by transforming a program into a graph, a data construct that consists of "nodes" connected by "edges." The most familiar example of a graph is probably a network diagram, in which the nodes (depicted as circles) represent computers, and the edges (depicted as lines connecting the circles) represent the bandwidth of the links between them. In this case, however, the nodes represent individual instructions in a program, and the edges represent the amount of data that each instruction passes to the next.

"The code transitions from this statement to this next statement, and there's a certain amount of data that has to be carried over from the previous statement to the next statement," Madden explains. "If the next statement uses some variable that was computed in the previous statement, then there's some data dependency between the two statements, and the size of that dependency is the size of the variable." If the whole program runs on one computer, then the variable is stored in main memory, and each statement simply accesses it directly. But if consecutive statements run on separate computers, the data has to make the jump with them.

"There's some cost to shipping data across the network, and there's some cost to every network round-trip that you do," Madden says. "So we want to find a placement of these nodes on the two different servers that minimizes the overall cost or overall runtime of the program."

In fact, Cheung adds, Pyxis finds several such placements of the nodes, some that push more computation to the database server and some that push less. "Our tool is able to dynamically switch between them based on the current load on the server," Cheung says.

Benchmarking

In experiments involving a standard set of simulated database transactions, Pyxis was three times as fast as a typical implementation, while cutting the bandwidth consumed almost in half. Moreover, the improvements it afforded were within a few percent of those that resulted from careful optimizations hand-coded by software engineers.

At the moment, Pyxis works with programs written in Java, which Madden says is the language favored by many commercial Web developers. But adapting it to other popular languages would require revising only the code that translates programs into graphical models; the rest of the system would remain the same.

In ongoing work, the four researchers on the Pyxis paper are collaborating with Armand Solar-Lezama, an assistant professor of computer science and electrical engineering at MIT, to make it even easier to streamline database-dependent Web applications. Most databases are written in so-called declarative languages such as SQL, which allow programmers to issue high-level commands, such as finding the largest value of some variable, without specifying a computational approach. The database system then automatically chooses the most efficient algorithm for executing the command, depending on the data characteristics.

Web programmers who are better-versed in Java than SQL will sometimes move large batches of data from the database to the application server, only to perform operations on it that SQL would have done more efficiently anyway. The researchers are developing a system that builds on Pyxis, dubbed StatusQuo, that can identify such inefficient application logic. It then automatically converts the application code into a SQL query, which the database then executes by whatever means it deems most efficient.

Campaign for 'Church of Satan' in Blackburn is condemned

A SOCIAL networking site?claims it wants to?set up a devil worshipping church in Blackburn.

?Say YES to Blackburn ?1m Church of Satan? was launched on Facebook on Wednesday allegedly by people worshipping the devil.

Since it was posted online 138 people have joined the group.

It is thought the site may be a protest against organised religion in the town.

The site has been critcised by religious leaders who say some people joining it might think ?it is just a bit of a joke? but the concept behind it is deeply offensive.

A spokesman for the group said all of its members were ?mature adults from the Lancashire area? and that it was a ?serious group intent on making a point?.

He said: ?The question was asked about freedom of choice to express views religious or not, provided they don't interfere with anyone else.

?We strongly believe that people of all backgrounds, creed and cultures have the right to worship their deity if they so choose.?

The group categorically states it is in no way connected to the American Church of Satan but is less clear on its affiliations with the UK Church of Satan.

Speaking on behalf of the Diocese of Blackburn, Rev Graham Sawley, said; ?Anything to do with Satan is evil.

?The Church of Satan is therefore evil as is anyone involved with it. Anyone dabbling in evil and the occult needs to be extremely careful and should stay away.

?Evil is the complete absence of good, therefore anyone who is involves themselves could suffer extreme adverse consequences. The advice from the church is to stay away from it.?

The group claims it wants to raise ?1million in donations to set up the church.

But the majority of comments poke fun at the idea.

For instance the Thwaites building has been suggested as a possible site once the company moves out because of the luminous red lettering on the side of the building.

The spokesman said: ?We don't expect everyone to like the idea. People haven't liked the idea of other religious centres being set up in the area, so we don't expect a 100 per cent acceptance rate. At the moment we're testing the water and the feedback so far has been encouraging.?

Former Hyndburn vicar, Rev Kevin Logan, said: ?I wrote a book called ?Satanism and the Occult? back in the 1990?s.

?As part of my research I looked at 300 court cases with the defendant blaming their actions on Satanism.

?Amazingly people accused of all sorts of crimes including murder said their beliefs made them do this.

?Obviously, when it gets to this stage it can cause real damage to the individual and society. This site is clearly going to cause offence.?

Keep in mind, at this point, I?m ready to buy widgets. The only question is whether I?ll buy them from Widget World or some other provider.?When deciding, I want to know two things: 1) Are Widget World widgets really all that great, and 2) if I buy widgets from them, am I getting the best deal.

After watching Widget World's promo video, I understand exactly why they have such a great product.

Not quite ready to pull the trigger, I go back the Facebook company page, where I find a series of brief customer comments. I'm drawn to the one from my Aunt Mabel saying that Widget World sells high-quality widgets at a competitive price. That?s good enough for me: Aunt Mabel is known to be thrifty and thorough-going in her consumer research. Then I see a big banner that reads, ?check-in on Facebook when at Widget World to receive 20% our world-famous widgets.

Perfect. Off to Widget World I go.

WHY IT MATTERS

This example illustrates exactly how online content marketing can impact social media at every stage of the buying process. At the top-of-the-funnel, I read a blog about widgets. I then watched a middle-of-the-funnel promotional webcast about Widget World?s widgets, and finally read some bottom-of-the-funnel customer testimonials in support of said widgets. Taken together, it was enough info for me to buy.

Importantly, the starting point, middle point, and ending point of my research was on social media. I never really engaged with the Widget World website. I didn?t need to. I found everything I was looking for on social media.

That is not to say your company should pitch its website in favor of a social-only approach; such action would be folly. A company website is still the most efficient distribution hub for online content. Instead, think of your website as your brand?s Internet storefront. In this analogy, your online content acts as the sales and marketing collateral, with social media playing the dual role of virtual PR manager and sales rep rolled into one.

And what was Widget World?s acquisition cost for the sale? They wrote an informational blog, shared it on social media, uploaded their company promotional video onto YouTube, linked it to their other social sites such as Facebook, and perhaps encouraged customers to support them on Facebook.

That?s it.

Finally, because I thoroughly enjoy my Widget World widgets, I took the time to fill out a few brief comments on Facebook, and share that original blog post on my news feed. More free promotion for Widget World.

Why did I bother? It?s the least I could do after getting such a great deal on widgets.

LONDON, Aug 30 (Reuters) - Tottenham Hotspur received mixed

fortunes on Thursday with centre half Younes Kaboul having a

knee operation that will sideline him for four months while

striker Jermain Defoe signed a new three-year contract.

"Younes Kaboul has undergone knee surgery in France today.

The France defender is expected to be sidelined for four

months," the Premier League club said on their website

(www.tottenhamhotspur.com) on Thursday.

The 26-year-old was forced out of the European Championship

in June because of a serious knee complaint.

Spurs also said on their website that Defoe, who is 10th in

the club's all-time scoring charts with 119 goals, had signed

his new deal.

The 29-year-old former West Ham United and Portsmouth

striker has 16 goals in 49 international appearances for

England.
