Focus on child's best interests improves ex-spouse relations | Fort ...

Formerly married couples who are able to put aside the contentiousness and bickering sometimes associated with a divorce and child custody dispute to focus on the best interests of the child will develop a better post-divorce relationship with each other, according to a study conducted by researchers at the University of Missouri. The study involved interviews with 20 women who were in joint custody arrangements with their former spouses.

A majority of the women interviewed for the study reported that their relationship with their former spouse went from contentious to cordial after both parents began focusing on the effect their combative relationship was having on their children. The study participants reported that communication with their former spouses was essential in the process of fostering and maintaining relationships between the children and both parents. The relationship between the former partners became more cordial and cooperative once the couples decided to put aside their own differences and concentrate on the relationship each parent had with the children.

When parties in a divorce fight over issues such as child custody, support and property rights, they can lose sight of the effect their conflict is having on the children. According to the study, couples who focus their attention on the impact their fighting is having on the children, instead of on their relationship issues with each other, learn to put aside their conflict. Becoming better parents helps to improve the relationship the parents have with each other. Divorce proceedings can be adversarial, but they do not have to have permanent impacts on children.

Earphones potentially as dangerous as noise from jet engines, researchers find

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? Turning the volume up too high on your headphones can damage the coating of nerve cells, leading to temporary deafness, scientists from the University of Leicester have shown for the first time.

Earphones or headphones on personal music players can reach noise levels similar to those of jet engines, the researchers said.

Noises louder than 110 decibels are known to cause hearing problems such as temporary deafness and tinnitus (ringing in the ears), but the University of Leicester study is the first time the underlying cell damage has been observed.

The study has been published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

University of Leicester researcher Dr Martine Hamann of the Department of Cell Physiology and Pharmacology, who led the study, said:

"The research allows us to understand the pathway from exposure to loud noises to hearing loss. Dissecting the cellular mechanisms underlying this condition is likely to bring a very significant healthcare benefit to a wide population. The work will help prevention as well as progression into finding appropriate cures for hearing loss."

Nerve cells that carry electrical signals from the ears to the brain have a coating called the myelin sheath, which helps the electrical signals travel along the cell. Exposure to loud noises -- i.e. noise over 110 decibels -- can strip the cells of this coating, disrupting the electrical signals. This means the nerves can no longer efficiently transmit information from the ears to the brain.

However, the coating surrounding the nerve cells can reform, letting the cells function again as normal. This means hearing loss can be temporary, and full hearing can return, the researchers said.

Dr Hamann explained: "We now understand why hearing loss can be reversible in certain cases. We showed that the sheath around the auditory nerve is lost in about half of the cells we looked at, a bit like stripping the electrical cable linking an amplifier to the loudspeaker. The effect is reversible and after three months, hearing has recovered and so has the sheath around the auditory nerve."

The findings are part of ongoing research into the effects of loud noises on a part of the brain called the dorsal cochlear nucleus, the relay that carries signals from nerve cells in the ear to the parts of the brain that decode and make sense of sounds. The team has already shown that damage to cells in this area can cause tinnitus -- the sensation of 'phantom sounds' such as buzzing or ringing.

The research was funded by the Wellcome Trust, Medisearch, GlaxoSmithkline and the Royal Society.

How pandas pick perfect spot to pee

Wild giant pandas are endangered loners that roam remote bamboo forests in the mountains of China. When the bears actually want to find each other ? typically during their short mating window ? it's important that they pick the perfect place to leave their scent.

So what qualities do peeing pandas look for in a tree? Researchers say bark roughness helps the pandas' scent carry, while a large width makes for an easier target to aim at, especially for male pandas spraying urine in a handstand.

Researchers monitored where pandas left their pee and smelly anogenital gland secretions (AGS) ? a waxy substance that carries information about a panda's sex and age ? in the Qinling Mountains from 2007 to 2008. They found that the pandas preferred to leave both scents on rough bark, which might ensure the odor is captured by the crevices and doesn't evaporate quickly.

The pandas also liked to leave their scent higher off the ground, maximizing the size of the odor field, the researchers said. To get their urine up as high as possible, male pandas often bust out a handstand and let it spray. This, in turn, could explain why the pandas tended to pee on wider trees. [ See Video of Panda Handstand and Panda Mating Dance ]

"Aiming urine backwards and hitting the target is probably no easy task, particularly when doing a handstand," the researchers wrote in the July 2012 issue of the journal Animal Behavior, "so selection of larger trees for urine marks probably maximizes the amount of urine that reaches the target."

The study's authors initially thought moss might have the same effect as bark roughness, serving as a sponge for the pandas' scent. But moss cover seemed to make little difference in where the pandas peed.

What's more, the bears liked to leave their waxy gland secretions (also called "long-lasting calling cards" by some) on trees with no moss. One explanation for this could be that the bark's sap might bind to scent chemicals and keep them potent. Moss cover might prevent that from happening, the researchers said.

The panda's deliberate scent-marking moves are likely tied to energy efficiency. The bears almost exclusively survive on bamboo, which contains just slightly more energy than it takes to consume it.

"These choices have clear effects on the scent signal, making it last longer, be detected from (farther) away, or otherwise enhance its communication efficiency," Ron Swaisgood, a San Diego Zoo researcher involved in the study, said in a statement.

Anthony Brogdon: 'The Great Detroit' Filmmaker On Making A ...

Does Detroit get a bad rap? First-time filmmaker Anthony Brogdon thinks so, and wants to set the record straight. His upcoming documentary, "The Great Detroit," takes a panoramic look at the city's history, scenery and people with the explicit intent of emphasizing the positive.

Fireworks, Henry Ford, puppets, Midtown's Noel Night, hydroplanes and a century-old hat shop are just a few of the topics that Brogdon explores in his 90-minute film. The project, which features dozens of interviews, has been in production for over a year and should be complete by early autumn.

The Huffington Post reached out to Brogdon to find out why a business man with a background importing promotional merchandise undertook a quest to shed some sunlight on the Motor City.

Detroit's been a popular subject for documentaries lately. Some of them focus on the city's urban gardening movement and art scene, others on its economic decline. What makes your unique?

"The Great Detroit" examines Detroit in broad terms and not just one specific industry. It's 100% positive. We cover the business, social services, religious, education, medical, arts, recreation, technology and more. We highlighted some of Detroit's nationally known annual events. We have footage of Detroit's downtown, midtown, business districts, parks, neighborhoods, and riverfront. We cited many little known facts, important historical moments, and offer many inspiring comments by Detroiters. It's like a 90 minute commercial.

Why do you think there's a so much of a negative media focus on Detroit?

Some of the negative media focus is warranted because Detroit has declined from its status as the country's fifth-largest city, which is probably the largest drop in population of all urban cities in the country. It's not the manufacturing powerhouse it once was with so much U.S. owned manufacturing being done internationally, and our city has lost a large diverse cultural community. Plus, Detroit does have a high crime rate. Detroit is majority African-American which, in the minds of media people, deems it a candidate for such negative attention.

Some people say that Detroit's image has changed over the last few years into something of a sympathetic scrappy underdog. Chrysler's "Imported From Detroit" ads would be one example of this. I've also spoken with an entrepreneur who said one of the reasons he's opening a bicycle factory in the city is because Detroit has brand appeal. What are your thoughts on this?

I would agree that the country knows that the media has beaten up on Detroit for a long time, which has given our city the underdog perspective; however, at the same time people who really know Detroit know that Detroit isn't as bad as the media portrays, that Detroit is still recognized as a major city, that Detroit is home to the automobile industry, Motown music, Kronk boxing, electronic music and partner to our international neighbor Canada. People were happy to see the Chrysler commercials which exclaimed a pride about Detroit to the world.

What's your relationship with the city of Detroit?

I am a native Detroiter, graduate of its Detroit Public School system and a resident for all but 5 years of my life when I lived in Atlanta.

What did you discover about the city while making the film?

I discovered that Detroit has a rich history and that it's internationally recognized. Detroit's rich history includes being a major player in the war for United States independence, for being at the forefront for mass production, in professional sports having the original franchise that make up the National Football League, National Hockey Association and Major League Baseball, for in the arts being considered the birthplace for puppet theater, for being the birthplace for Kiwanis International and more. Understandably, Detroit is known for being the automobile capital and for Motown but, on an international level, Detroit is known for being the birthplace for electronic music and is recognized for hosting hydroplane boat and speed car racing among other things.

Who were the most intriguing interview subjects you spoke with and why?

In "The Great Detroit" we interview over 40 people and each have an intriguing story; however, I found many little known facts.. In the interview with a former commodore of the Detroit Yacht Club, that the land the club sits on is man-made; or in the interview with the owner of Henry the Hatter, how his business has survived over 100 years; or in the interview with the founder of Mosaic Youth Group, how talented many Detroit kids are and their quest for perfection. Or in the interview with a Belle Isle historian, how the island is the only urban recreational island in the country, and how the U.S. army forces conducted training exercises on the beach front.

While your movie clearly strives to accentuate the positives about Detroit, the city is certainly facing its share of difficulties right now. Are there thoughts about the city's economic and political woes that you'd like to share?

My documentary in 100% positive. So even though we shot footage of many of Detroit neighborhoods, we don't show images of the blight or, when interviewing the director of a soup kitchen, we didn't film while they were feeding those in need nor do we comment on the political missteps that have happened recently. My personal view about the woes you mention is that its unfortunate, that economically the city has had many setbacks mainly due to the automobile industry decline and the influx of foreign products and the political woes were by people who initially had the best intentions.

Tell us about strongdetroit.net.

Strongdetroit.net is a website that will become an online magazine to report only positive news stories, be a sounding board for dialogue on various topics about Detroit, and the retail arm for Strong Detroit merchandise.

Your biography says you have a background in business and writing. How did you get into filmmaking?

I am new to filmmaking and "The Great Detroit" is my first attempt. The thought to do this documentary has two angles. One, I want to become a big independent filmmaker, and my first feature length will be a film titled "Foot Soldiers", a script I adapted from a play that I wrote and staged on several occasions. I already have written two other screenplays. Secondly, I thought that to get experience in filmmaking, a documentary would be a great place to start. I have been working on this film for over 14 months.

What sort of obstacles did you run into as a first time filmmaker?

I really didn't run into any obstacles doing this film. The State of Michigan has a website that lists people who work in every capacity needed to make a film; this gave me a list of contacts, Plus, there's a yahoo Michigan-based group specific to the film industry where I asked questions. If I would say that I have had any obstacles, it would be in raising money. I have personally financed the film to this point, and I now have a fundraising campaign on Indiegogo.com/TheGreatDetroit.

Who helped you make the film?

Every person I have interviewed has helped me make this film for they believed enough to take the time to sit in front of the camera. My cameraman, Hugh Hatten, has been my biggest helper. He believed enough to make a deal on his fees enabling me to afford his services. My production crew is just the two of us. I direct and hold the boom mic, and he films.

When will you be finished with the film?

I have interviewed roughly 26 of the expected 40 people on my list, plus I have shot much of the supplemental footage and have edited as I go. I expect to finish the film within the next 45 days.

Where will people be able to see it?

There will be many opportunities for people to see my film, I hope to have a huge premier hopefully held at the Detroit Institute of Arts, it will be a red carpet, spotlight, fundraiser for some nonprofits. Then a weekend of showings at a local theater, screenings in local, national, and international film festivals. I'll have DVDs distributed through various gift and convenience shops throughout the metro Detroit area, and finally there will be some YouTube shorts on my channel Strong Detroit.

Anything else people should know about the movie?

This film is going to show the world another side of Detroit and I guarantee it will make Detroiters proud.

How to Become a Team Player and Earn More Money: 7 Essential ...

Written By Brian Tracy | Personal Success | August 28th, 2012 | No Comments ?

healthy relationship- earn more money- team playerYour ability to be a team player will have a greater impact on your ability to earn more money than any other quality. To earn what you?re really worth, you have to become an expert in building a healthy relationship with others.

Healthy relationships can be extremely complicated, but to become a

team player
and maintain quality relationships requires only a few basic principles. Let me give you seven:

Principle One: The first principle building a healthy relationship is trust. A healthy relationship must ultimately be based on trust. To build trust, you always keep your word. You remain consistent and dependable in everything you say and do. You become the kind of team player who is utterly reliable in every situation. You never do or say anything that can shake this foundation of trust upon which a healthy relationship is built.

Principle Two: The second principle for building a healthy relationship is respect. Taking time to deliberately express your respect for the uniqueness of an individual makes him or her feel valuable and important. By demonstrating that kind of respect, you build and enhance the quality of your relationships and become a respected team player yourself.

Principle Three: The third principle for success in relationships is communication. In communicating well with another person, time is the critical factor. The value of a healthy relationship can increase for both you and the other person depending on the amount of time that you invest.

When you take the time to become the type of team player that focuses on the important issues of a relationship, you open the channels of communication. And when you listen calmly, quietly, and with total attention, you demonstrate the respect you have for the other person, and you deepen the level of trust between you.

Principle Four: The fourth principle of creating a

healthy relationship
is courtesy. When you say please and thank you on a regular basis to the people in your life, you make them feel better about themselves and about what they are doing. You raise their self-esteem. Alas, it is often with the people we care about most that we are the least courteous and polite. Emmet Fox once wrote, ?If you must be rude, be rude to strangers. But save your company manners for your family.?

Principle Five: Caring. The greatest gift that you can give to others is the gift of unconditional love and acceptance. The kindest thing you can do as a team player is refrain from criticizing, condemning, or complaining to them or concerning them.

Think of yourself as a people-builder rather than a people-basher. Catch others doing something right. To become a respected team player, always look for ways to make people feel more valuable, more respected, and more loved.

Principle Six: The sixth principle for success with people is a combination of praise and appreciation for everything that others do for you, both large and small. When you say thank you to another person for something they do for you, they feel better about themselves, and they want to do more. As a team player, praise someone for something they have accomplished, so their self-esteem goes up. They feel valuable and important. And there is a boomerang effect that causes your own self-esteem to go up, exactly as if you yourself had been praised or appreciated.

Principle Seven: The seventh principle for success in building a healthy relationship is simply helpfulness. Your constant willingness to step in and do little things to alleviate the burdens felt by your team is always appreciated and respected. This willingness to share, to contribute, to help each other is an important facet of lasting relationships that can help you earn respect as a team player.

Perhaps the most important thing you ever do in life is to build and maintain long-term, healthy relationship with people you surround yourself with. When you make everything else secondary to this central purpose, you will find yourself enjoying happiness and rewards in exponential proportion to the efforts you put in and your ability earn more money will increase significantly.

Best Buy founder ever closer to finalizing company buyout bid

Best Buy founder ever closer to finalizing company buyout bidBest Buy founder Richard Schulze may have stepped down as chairman of the board, but he's certainly not out. His plan to buy the turbulent company has reached the next step -- an agreement which pre-empts the formal offer. Schulze now has access to all the private numbers he'll need to put together an investor group within the 60-day timeframe. And, if this round is unsuccessful, it'll be next January before another bid can go to the Board of Directors, followed by direct shareholder offers if the second attempt fails. Given that Schulze owns 20 percent of Best Buy, he gets two seats-worth of voting power as long as he sticks to the agreed process. So, with a new CEO taking the reigns in September and the acquisition machinery in top gear, is there fresh hope for the big box retailer?

Will the Colombian government make peace with FARC rebels?

With the aim of ending five decades of war, Colombian president?Juan Manuel Santos announced exploratory talks with leftist FARC rebels on Monday. A peace agreement would conclude a conflict that has killed tens of thousands over the years. ?

Colombia's government?is seeking peace with the country's biggest rebel group, the FARC, and could consider also holding talks with a second guerrilla movement to end five decades of war, President?Juan Manuel Santos?said on Monday.

In a televised address from the presidential palace, Santos said his government would learn from the mistakes of so many previous leaders who tried but failed to clinch a lasting ceasefire with the?Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia.

"Since the first day of my government I have completed my constitutional obligation to find peace. With that aim, we have had exploratory conversations with the FARC to seek an end to the conflict," he said, confirming weeks of swirling rumors that his government had started behind-the-scenes discussions.

He added that the military would continue its operations "throughout every centimeter" of Colombia?while talks continued.

Santos did not provide further details, but said he would reveal more about the talks in the coming days.

A successful peace agreement with the rebels would secure him a place in history as the leader who ended a conflict that has killed tens of thousands over the years and left the Andean nation's reputation in tatters.

In response to a Reuters interview published on Monday with the head of the nation's second biggest rebel group, Santos said the?National Liberation Army, known as the ELN, could also be involved in the peace talks.

"Today the ELN has expressed, via an international news agency, its interest in participating in conversations to put an end to the violence," the president said in his brief speech.

"I tell that group that, within the same framework, they too can be part of the effort to end the conflict."

A?Colombian intelligence?source told Reuters earlier that as part of the deal to hold talks, Santos had agreed that FARC rebels would not be extradited to any other country to stand trial.

Details are still being worked out, the source said, but the negotiations could take place in?Cuba?or?Norway. U.S. President?Barack Obama?is aware of the process and is in agreement, the source said.

Santos, who is at the mid-point of his four-year term in office, has said he would consider peace talks with the FARC only if he was certain the drug-funded group would negotiate in good faith.
