ScienceDaily (Aug. 13, 2012) ? The second of four main instruments to fly aboard NASA's James Webb Space Telescope (Webb) has been delivered to NASA. The Fine Guidance Sensor (FGS) will enable the telescope to accurately and precisely point at the correct, intended objects for it to observe. The FGS is packaged together as a single unit with the Near-Infrared Imager and Slitless Spectrograph (NIRISS) science instrument.
FGS/NIRISS arrived at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., July 30. It has been undergoing inspection before post-delivery testing and then integration into Webb's science instrument payload known as the Integrated Science Instrument Module (ISIM).
"This is an exciting event," said Scott Lambros, Webb telescope Instrument Systems Manager at NASA Goddard. "The FGS instrument is part of the integrated control system that performs the extremely fine pointing and stability needed for the Observatory; while the NIRISS instrument will provide great science and new discovery space. This milestone is the culmination of many years of hard work by our Canadian partners. We have had great cooperation between the FGS team and the Webb telescope team and look forward to continued cooperation integrating the instrument into the ISIM and Observatory."
The Canadian Space Agency (CSA) developed the Webb's Fine Guidance Sensor and the Near-Infrared Imager and Slitless Spectrograph. The FGS will direct the telescope precisely, allowing it to study stars and planets forming in other stellar systems. Both were designed, built and tested by COM DEV International in Ottawa and Cambridge, Ontario, Canada with technical contributions from the University of Montr?al and the National Research Council Canada, and scientific guidance of the FGS science team.
"Imagine the challenge at hand here: design and deliver technology capable of unprecedented levels of precision to conduct breakthrough science on board the largest, most complex and most powerful telescope ever built," said Steve MacLean, President of the CSA, Longueil, Quebec, Canada.
The FGS consists of two identical cameras that are critical to Webb's ability to "see." Their images will allow the telescope to determine its position, locate its celestial targets, and remain pointed to collect high-quality data. The FGS will guide the telescope with incredible precision, with an accuracy of one millionth of a degree of angle.
Although the NIRISS is packaged with the FGS, it is functionally independent. NIRISS provides unique capabilities that will aid in finding the earliest and most distant objects in the Universe's history. It will also peer through the glare of nearby young stars to unveil new Jupiter-like exoplanets. It will have the capability of detecting the thin atmosphere of small, habitable, Earth-like planets and determine its chemical composition to seek water vapor, carbon dioxide and other potential biomarkers such as methane and oxygen.
The FGS-NIRISS science team is jointly led by Dr. John Hutchings of the National Research Council of Canada (NRC), Victoria, British Columbia, Canada and Professor Ren? Doyon from the University of Montr?al, Director of the Mont-M?gantic Observatory and member of the Quebec Center of Astrophysics Research (Centre de recherche en astrophysique du Qu?bec) or CRAQ. The team includes astronomers from: COM DEV; the NRC; Saint Mary's University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada; the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI); the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich, Switzerland (ETH Zurich); the University of Montr?al; the University of Rochester, N.Y.; and the University of Toronto, Canada.
The most powerful space telescope ever built, Webb is the successor to NASA's Hubble Space Telescope. Webb's four instruments will reveal how the universe evolved from the Big Bang to the formation of our solar system. Webb is a joint project of NASA, the European Space Agency and the Canadian Space Agency.

MCLEAN, VA ? (Marketwire) ? 08/13/12 ? VirtualSharp Software, the leading provider of next generation automated Disaster Recovery solutions for private and public clouds, today announced that Host Ventura, a leading European specialist in Dedicated Managed Hosting, has based its RaaS platform on VirtualSharp?s ReliableDR so that companies can protect their vital applications and guarantee recovery.
?A new generation of recovery-in-the-cloud offerings has the potential to improve the frequency with which provider customers can conduct live testing, and eliminate recovery configuration server and storage capital cost. To remain competitive, Disaster Recovery providers are continuously improving remote access to their data centers, which enables in-house recovery management teams to orchestrate live exercises remotely, without having to travel,? wrote John Morency, research vice president at Gartner, Inc. in ?Hype Cycle for Business Continuity Management and IT Disaster Recovery Management, 2012? (Research Paper G00233826).
?We see an increasing need for Hosted Disaster Recovery services in the market, mainly for SMBs and mid-market companies,? said Tom Arentsen, Technical Director at Host Ventura and a VMware Certified Design Expert, the highest certification available from VMware. ?These companies do not have the capabilities of owning a secondary data center, but have a heavily virtualized infrastructure running their critical applications whose continuity of services has to be assured with very tight SLAs, just like bigger companies.?
Using VirtualSharp?s ReliableDR, Host Ventura can now offer companies a safe infrastructure within their data centers and ensure a fully automated Disaster Recovery process from the infrastructure components all the way up to the application stack. As ReliableDR constantly tests and measures against the SLAs defined, not only will applications be brought back up successfully by Host Ventura?s service, but they will also fully meet the contractual agreements with their customers.
Arentsen continued: ?Providing end-to-end visibility and giving our customers the tools and reporting capabilities to measure our service further strengthens our relationship and creates confidence.?
The VirtualSharp solution allows Host Ventura to enforce RPOs and predict RTOs at the application level and gives customers continuous insight in the status of Disaster Recovery readiness of their applications via a web portal without the need to install anything on their premises.
?We are very pleased that Host Ventura has chosen VirtualSharp to build and deliver their cutting edge RaaS solution,? said Michael Hillewaert, VP of International Sales at VirtualSharp Software. ?This new service for smaller and medium size businesses shows the importance of Disaster Recovery Assurance beyond the traditional limited capabilities across all customer sizes.?

In a renovated warehouse in a weary-looking section of troy, n.y., 25-year-old katie bellucci has the rapt attention of 27 fifth graders. They are singing, stamping, clapping and waving their hands in the air?far more excitement than you would expect for ratios and fractions. The class is working together on a word problem involving a fictional basketball team with a win-to-loss ratio of 9:3. What is the ratio of losses to total games played? Bellucci gets everyone involved in breaking down the process (?What do we need to do first??). Once the class arrives at a fraction?wins plus losses, divided by losses, or (9 + 3)/3?she encourages them to reduce it. ?Okay, who's got the GCF?? she says, referring to the greatest common factor. She zips up and down the aisles, cajoling one student and then another for one more piece of the solution. The students track her every move, knowing she may call on them even if their hands are down. ?I'm seeing so many lightbulbs and so much diligence,? she says. If an answer comes easily, she will push ahead with that student and ask for the how and why behind it. The bell rings, and as the kids file out for lunch, each one hands Bellucci an ?Exit Ticket??the solution to two problems that exemplify the core lesson of the day, which Bellucci will scrutinize to determine if the class mastered the day's objective.
Troy Prep, where Bellucci teaches, is one of the higher-performing public schools in New York State even though the vast majority of its students come from low-income families. In 2011, the second year the school was open, 74 percent of its fifth graders scored at the ?proficient? level on the New York State math exam, as compared with only 66 percent of fifth graders across the state. Even more impressive, after two years in the school, 100 percent of Troy Prep's sixth graders scored in the proficient range. What accounts for the school's success? Doug Lemov, a leader of the Uncommon Schools Charter Network, of which Troy Prep is a part, does not hesitate: outstanding, well-trained teachers like Bellucci.

The iPhone 4 and 4S feature stunning, all-glass designs, but they're not exactly the most durable smartphones out there. Even most adventure-averse owners can probably be found sporting a case to protect their glass-clad smartphones. The LifeProof iPhone 4/4S Case ($79.99 direct) , as its name suggests, is built to withstand whatever life throws at you. Unlike other ruggedized case options out there, the LifeProof is surprisingly thin and light. And best of all, it's completely waterproof.
You've probably seen rugged cases from Otterbox and the like?calling them bulky would be an understatement. The LifeProof case is only 0.43 inches thick (versus 0.37 inches for the iPhone alone) and weighs just under an ounce. It looks and feels like a normal, non-rugged case, which is definitely a plus. There are two interlocking plastic pieces, with a clear plastic screen cover built into the front. I'm not a fan of anything that gets between your finger and the glass, but for the sake of protection and waterproofing, the plastic cover is tolerable. It is prone to air bubbles and will flex to the touch, but this doesn?t affect usability. The plastic cover does, however, make the screen appear dimmer and more reflective than normal.
Otherwise, there are rubber buttons that allow you to use all the iPhone controls, while a sealable door and plug cover the 30-pin port and headphone jack. The port opening is very narrow, and anything thicker than the standard Apple cable will not fit. The headphone jack is also fairly narrow, but luckily LifeProof includes an adapter that acts as both a way to use headphones under water and extend the jack beyond the case. Rounding out the package is a microfiber cloth and replacement headphone jack plug.
![]()
Initial setup for the LifeProof is a bit more intense than your run-of-the-mill case. It's one of the few fully waterproof cases?not to be confused with water resistant?and must be water-tested before you begin using it. This is easy enough; simply assemble the case without a phone inside and fully submerge the case in water. Detailed instructions on setup and testing can be found on LifeProof's website, and I can't stress how important it is to follow these as closely as possible.
My initial water test went perfectly, and not a single drop penetrated the LifeProof's seal. There are vents for all the microphones and speakers, and I didn't notice any significant muffling on calls or when playing music through the phone's speakers. The lens opening on the back is covered in anti-reflective glass, which did not distort photos or wash out the phone's built-in flash. Touch gestures do not register when fully submerged, which is not the case's fault, but you can start the camera app up before going under and use the Volume Up button to snap photos or start video recordings.
All in all, my iPhone 4 was just as functional with the LifeProof case on, and the added bulk is fairly insignificant considering the vastly improved durability and protection. The case is unobtrusive enough to be an everyday case, and will add peace of mind for both the avid adventurer and clumsy city dweller. We haven't reviewed any comparable cases yet, but another option to keep on your radar is the forthcoming Otterbox Armor series, which tauts a waterproof enclosure and serious impact protection.?

If you are looking to find weight loss help it is critical that you focus on the right things to achieve the success you desire. Here is a brief summary of the factors to be considered:
The first thing that should be given careful consideration is whether you are looking to drop just a few pounds or embark on an entirely new healthy lifestyle. While the latter may be a better general overall choice, it may not suit your immediate goal of say losing 5 pounds to fit better into that new pair of jeans.
Given that your goal is just to lose that 5 extra pounds then a simple weight loss solution might be the best approach. Using a plan like Fat Loss 4 Idiots, which is ?diet only?, you can very possibly achieve your objective in just 2 weeks.
On the other hand, if more of a total healthy lifestyle is in order, then a diet and fitness program like Fat Burning Furnace may be more appropriate. In this system, simple, but effective, 15 minute exercise routines done three times per week are combined with an easy to follow nutrition plan.

I?m not going to have kids. It?s a long story and probably a relief to many of you.
But I?m aiming to be that crazy auntie who buys the love of my nieces and nephews. Now this will be difficult since I make only enough money to keep pumping that $3.83 gallon gas once a week into my car.
So I?m aimlessly driving around Highland Park? which I call the Latino part to the predominantly Filipino part of Eagle Rock, which is this awesome quiet community on the outer edges of LA with houses that date back to (gasp!) 1920s, but I digress?

Highland Park... land of old and new businesses!
There it is: J and R Party. It?s a little storefront in a small strip mall next to a filipino point-point joint which is ?Home of the Crispy Chicken!?
I enter with purpose.
This my friends, is Party City minus the bullcrap retail chain ?I just work here? staff. This is Jesse and Rosa(?)? two people in grey shirts just staring out the window? waiting.

Please come in.
There is something about these little family run businesses that make my heart ache. Do they ever get enough business? How do they pay for this retail space? There is a particular book by an asian-american female writer who slips my mind (she did one-woman shows in the late ?90s, also writes for NPR, gosh what was her name? She was one funny writer, had like 3 names..) where she writes an entire chapter on passing by these little mom and pop stores. They?re all over SoCal. Almost always in a strip mall. They vary from that asian Bengali all-you-can-eat buffet to this little J and R Party store.

Our dreams are in your hands!
You see the owners (cuz that?s what they are) standing by the door, peeking out the window, sometimes sitting down and eating a bowl of soup. They?re the ones who jump up and wipe down tables for you when you enter. They?re the ones whose eyes are semi-lit up with something like hope or pride or something like a faint fire when you walk in that door.
How many times I?ve driven past a mom and pop store and vowed to visit?! ?I?m going to hit that kabab place sometime.? ?I gotta try that yogurt place.? ?I gotta try out that Korean spa that just opened up down the hill.? Only to see, 7 months later, that business is puff! Gone. Those hopeful faces that cleaned the windows, gone. All that american dream, gone.
That?s why I?m here at J and R Party. Not only do they come highly recommended via Yelp, they?re not a chain store. I buy a pinata (shaped like a donkey) and Jesse (the owner) says, ?Hey if you ever want an original pinata, you just give me a picture and I?ll make it.? ?Really?? I ask. He smiles, ?Yes, I make pinatas.? His wife(?) Rosa points me down the middle aisle where I buy pinata stuffings: plastic parachute men, whistles, bubble toys, plastic bugs, fun things, etc. (My nieces and nephews are on a strict no sugar diet. That means I can?t just stuff it with candy. Sigh.) I throw my findings onto the counter and all in all, it?s $21.00. Rosa makes a little hole in my pinata ?to make it easier to put stuff in?. She hands me a business card. We throw a couple of jokes around. They were professional in addition to funny and warm.
I leave, thanking them for all their help. They smile and wave, and I skip happily to my car.
I know it?s only $21.00, but doesn?t it feel better? I was the only customer there in the 10 minutes I perused the plastic joys; I hope they had at least 3 more before they closed. I just want my money to go to people who still live the dream? even in this small and unknown strip mall in the Los Angeles vicinity.

Parking spot saved for you.

BEIRUT (AP) ? The head of Syria's main opposition group in exile called Sunday for international powers to impose a no-fly zone in border areas to protect civilians who are coming under increasingly intense attacks by regime warplanes and helicopters.
The president of the Syrian National Council, Abdelbaset Sieda, told The Associated Press that such a move by the international community would show President Bashar Assad's regime that his opponents around the world are serious.
The Syrian opposition has been calling for a no-fly zone over Syria for months. But Sieda renewed the plea a day after U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said Washington and Turkey were discussing a range of steps including a no-fly zone over some parts of Syria as the regime increasingly uses its air force to attack rebels.
"There must be special protection," Sieda said by telephone. "The numbers of martyrs are increasing and destruction too. If the country keeps going this way, then we are heading to a catastrophe."
Asked who will impose the no-fly zone, Sieda said: "We leave it to the international community."
Russia and China have vetoed attempts to pass tough U.N. Security Council resolutions aimed at Assad's regime. Last week, the U.N. and Arab League envoy to Syria, Kofi Annan, announced his resignation, following a frustrating six-month effort that failed to achieve even a temporary cease-fire.
Sieda said the no-fly zone should be along borders with Jordan and Turkey, adding that the opposition had called for such a move during last month's Friends of Syria meeting in Paris attended by world powers.
"Now that Syria's air force is taking part in bombing cities and towns, there must be protection for the Syrian people. There must be a no-fly zone so that there will be safe havens to refugees," he said.
Syria's civil war has spread to almost every province in the country and the death toll has increased over the past weeks. Activists say more than 20,000 people have been killed since the revolt against Assad's authoritarian rule began in March 2011.
Activists reported more clashes Sunday in some Damascus suburbs, the battleground city of Aleppo in the north, central Homs province, and the restive southern town of Daraa. The U.K.-based activist group Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said it had no immediate reports of casualties.
The deaths of two Syrian journalists on Saturday were reported on Sunday.
State-run news agency SANA said one of its reporters, Ali Abbas, was killed at his residence in Damascus. The report blamed an "armed terrorist group" ? the regime's catch-all term for its opponents ? but gave no further details.
Pan-Arab satellite news channel Al-Arabiya television said that Bara'a Yusuf al-Bushi, a Syrian national and army defector who worked with the station and several other international news organizations, was killed in a bomb attack while covering a story in al-Tal, a suburb in northern Damascus.
Journalists have suffered a number of casualties in the uprising, and in recent months there have been several attacks on pro-regime media.
The Observatory said that government forces were able to retake the northern town of Ariha, in the restive Idlib province, that had been under rebels control for months. The group said troops backed by tanks entered the town late Saturday and quoted witnesses as saying that many people were detained and some were the victims of "summary executions."
Also Sunday, SANA said troops killed Wael Mohammed al-Majdalawi who is a leader of the Sunni group al-Nusra Front, that claimed responsibility for deadly attacks over the past months including last week's killing of a prominent Syrian television broadcaster, who had been reported missing since July 19.
In a video released Sunday, Capt. Abdul-Nasser Shumeir, who commands the rebel "Baraa Brigades" said government troops launched two attacks in an attempt to free 48 Iranians they have been holding for 10 days. He said Assad's regime is responsible for the safety of the Iranians adding that any negotiations for their release should come after government forces lift the siege imposed on rebel-held areas.
He also called on the Iranian people to pressure their government to stop its support to Assad's regime. Rebels claimed the men are military personnel, including some members of Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guard, who were on a "reconnaissance mission" to help Assad's crackdown. Iran, however, says the group was pilgrims visiting a Shiite shrine in Damascus.
Syrian state news agency SANA also reported that security forces ambushed an armed group in Aleppo and killed and wounded some of them. It said that al-Safira residents in Aleppo prevented gunmen riding in five cars mounted with machine guns from entering their area.
The Observatory said three children, whose ages were between six and 11, were killed Sunday when a bus they were fleeing in with their parents from the Shammas neighborhood of the central city of Homs came under fire. It said government troops were conducting operations in the area.
In Cairo, the Arab League said an emergency meeting of Arab foreign ministers on Syria that had been scheduled for Sunday in Saudi Arabia has been postponed. It did not say why the meeting was postponed or give a new date.
