London?s Militarised Olympic Games Conjures Up Orwell?s 1984

The London Olympics are fast taking on the appearance and tone of a full-scale land, sea and air military operation rather than an international sporting event.

With surface-to-air missiles stationed on top of residential apartment blocks, Royal Navy battleships on alert and Royal Air Force fighter jets and helicopters patrolling the skies over Britain?s capital there is a foreboding sense of a nation at war instead of an occasion of internationalist fraternity that the ancient Games are supposed to embody.

The Games begin in just under two weeks. The latest development is the announcement by Britain?s Ministry of Defence that 3,500 extra troops are to be deployed to ensure security at the 30 venues hosting sporting events. This is in addition to the 13,500 military personnel already assigned to protect members of the public and sports teams from the risk of terrorist attack.

British General Sir Nick Parker, overseeing the security arrangements, has said that one of the contingencies being planned for is dealing with a ?9/11 type event?.

The total troop deployment in and around London represents 7,000 more personnel than is currently on British operations in Afghanistan.

This figure is in addition to the 10,000 extra police officers and a division of 10,000 private security guards. It was the disclosure that G45, the private security firm with the Olympics contract, could not fulfill its manpower requirements to cover the Games that prompted the latest enlisting of additional soldiers.

The militarization of the Olympics was conveyed inadvertently by a spokesman for the Ministry of Defence when he said: ?Many of the people whom the public will meet at the point of entry to any Olympic event will now be a serving member of the armed forces.?

Boris Johnson, the maverick Mayor of London, said in a statement: ?The mayor takes the issue of Olympics security extremely seriously, and having the finest and bravest service men and woman in the world at our disposal during the Games should be a source of great comfort.?

The Royal Navy?s largest battleship, HMS Ocean, will be moored on the Thames at Greenwich, providing a logistical command centre during the event. It will??also provide a base for Lynx helicopters manned with snipers to make round-the-clock sorties over the capital.

Royal Marines on patrol boats and inflatable dinghies are also assigned on the iconic river that snakes its way through London?s historic landmarks.

The RAF will also be patrolling the skies over the capital with Puma helicopters and Typhoon fighter jets operating out of RAF Northolt in West London and Ilford in East London.

But the most controversial deployment has been the installation of surface-to-air missile batteries in residential apartment blocks in the impoverished, rundown East End of London. Residents recently lost a court battle to prevent the Rapier SAM batteries being installed.

The mainly working-class local communities objected to the militarization of their neighbourhoods. They also questioned the safety for residents in the event of the weapons being used to bring down aircraft suspected of carrying out terror attacks. One local man said: ?What?s going to happen if our houses get showered with debris??

The military invasion of poor neighbourhoods for the four-week duration of Olympics has served to rankle already ill feeling towards the colossal spectacle. East London areas such as Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest lie in the shadow of some of the purpose-built venues. The staging of the Olympics, including the massive security operation, is reckoned to come to a total cost between $20 and $40 billion, much of which will be footed by the taxpayer. This is at time of swingeing austerity cuts by the British government amounting to a total of $140 billion axed from public spending.

Socially deprived communities in London?s East End have borne the brunt of government cutbacks required to balance Treasury books thrown into disarray from lavishing billions of dollars on bailing out corrupt private banks.

With unemployment and deprivation being felt keenly in areas like London?s East End, not many of the residents there will be able to afford the admission to the Olympics, with tickets fetching as much as $3,000.

Given the juxtaposition of this glitzy event and its garish corporate sponsorship alongside the sprawling grim poverty for many Londoners ? amid the backdrop of full-scale military operations and surveillance ? there is an eerie sense of George Orwell?s dystopian novel 1984.

Orwell?s classic story of an authoritarian police state was set mainly in London, which had become the capital of Airstrip One, a province of the American super-state, Oceania. The impoverished majority of the populace, the ?proles?, had to content themselves with seedy pubs and the faint hope of winning a weekly lottery, while the ?inner circle? lorded over the masses. The proles were kept in their place of servitude by emergency powers and a permanent state of war. There is also more than a suspicion in Orwell?s 1984 that the supposed state of war and incoming attacks from anonymous enemies were a contrivance by the elite to instill fear in the masses.

With the British government?s lead participation in America?s "global? war on terror? (commonly referred to as GWOT) and evidence that British intelligence colluded in the so-called 7/7 London underground terror bombings in 2005, Orwell?s 1984 looks increasingly like life imitating art.

The novel was published in 1949, one year after the last Olympics were staged in London. Those Games were held in the aftermath of World War II when much of London?s skyline would have still shown the devastation of the German Luftwaffe?s Blitzkrieg.

In 2012, London will also resemble a war zone, owing to the spurious ?war on terror? that the British government and its American allies have embarked on in the pursuit of domestic and foreign dominance.

Our Family Vacation - Penniless Parenting

Mike, Lee, Ike, Anneliese, and I spent this past week at a resort town where we, luckily, have a place we can stay free of charge; there's a reason it has become our annual vacation destination. I wanted to share some pictures as well as what we did; I also wanted to share a few lessons I've learned from our trip.

Before we left the house, my husband got annoyed at me- he thought I way over packed, bringing stuff as if we were going away for a year and not just 5 days.
I? I have experience with this stuff. I'm a mom afterall. I know exactly what happens when you go away, especially with kids! You think you'll only need a little bit of stuff, but then you have diaper blow outs, accidents, cranky kids because they want toys to play with, kids are hungry and you need to have food with which to feed them, etc... My motto is- if you under pack, you may end up really needing something that you didn't bring, and suffer because of it. If you overpack, the worst that can happen is you have more to carry.

My husband thought I overpacked, but in the end- we used everything that we brought, and honestly, I think we should have brought more than we did, as it would have saved us money, as you'll see below.

For our trip, I decided to use disposable diapers instead of our usual cloth, as doing diaper laundry on vacation wasn't a possibility. We did not go out to eat at all while we were away, both for frugal reasons and because of food intolerances, which meant that I had to bring along some cooking implements. I also chose to bring along some foods from home that I either wasn't sure if I'd be able to find there, or that would be much more expensive to buy on vacation. All in all, we traveled with two large backpacks, one small backpack, and one shoulder bag. I still don't think it was too much, but my husband disagrees. If we'd traveled with a car, I doubt anyone would have said we overpacked, but since we traveled there by bus, t was a little harder to lug everything along.
Yes, we went by bus. The cost of transportation there, $37 round trip for the family, was the only real money we spent on the trip, other than food, which we would have had to spend at home as well. I'll admit though, food does cost more on a trip than I would at home, but still nothing outrageous.

One thing we did not bring was sun screen- sun screen is often carcinogenic, and can cause bigger problems using it than not. We all made sure to be covered up, even when at the beach and in the water, wearing hats with brims, long sleeves, etc... to keep the sun from burning us. We also made use of large umbrellas at the beach, stayed in the shade as much as possible, and timed our activities so we were indoors during the hottest/sunniest part of the day. Doing that, none of us got burnt, thankfully, even with the really hot weather and no sunscreen.

The first day, because we only left home later on in the day, we got to our destination after it was already too late to go out and do something, so we just settled in, did some food shopping, then made a BBQ. I served spiced baked rice, green beans sauted with balsamic vinegar and mushrooms, and grilled chicken and eggplant.

The next day, we had gluten free cereal (bought on sale, then brought from home) with tahini milk, then chilled out at home. For lunch, we had sabich rice paper wraps, then headed out to the beach.

Ike had a great time playing in the sand with me. We dug channels for the waves to fill.

Ike, Mike, and Lee had a terrific time swimming at the beach.

Anneliese spent most of our beach trip taking a nap on a towel on the sand, covered by an umbrella. If you were wondering what we did for swim diapers for her, we used an unstuffed pocket diaper, which holds in poo, but doesn't absorb water.

I had a great time in the water as well! So cool and refreshing! The waves were a little too calm for my liking though...

On the way home from the beach, I passed some ice plants, which I'll tell you more about in a future post. Hint- its for foraging!
The view on our walk home from the beach.
Anneliese chilling out/sleeping, while being worn in my terrific baby carrier.
For supper that night, we had leftovers, as well as a one pot pasta and meat dish, as well as Bianca's beet salad (with raw beets instead of cooked).

Next morning, for breakfast, we had gluten free pancakes which I had made at home, froze, and brought along. Once defrosted, we ate them with peanut butter and jelly. We then went to a nearby grassy area to have a picnic lunch. We brought along rice cakes, mock tuna salad, a can of olives, and radishes. On the way there, I spotted a bunch of purslane, which we then ate on our open faced mock tuna salad/rice cake sandwiches. ?Yes, I forage on vacation. I don't just do it to save money, I do it because I get a kick out of it, and I really enjoy it. In fact, I especially like foraging on vacation, because I get to sample wild edibles that don't grow in my location, and get to try new foods.

While there, I spotted some plants I knew to be edible, whose name I forgot, but thanks to uploading my pictures to facebook via my smartphone, I was able to identify it as crithmum maritimum, also known as rock samphire, edible plant that grows along the coast. Shakespeare even writes about samphire harvesters. Once identified, I tasted the samphire- it reminded me of a spicy wild fennel, just with fleshier leaves. Its flowers remind me of fennel flowers. I wasn't surprised to discover that it is actually closely related to fennel.

We brought along a kite and frisbee to play with on the grass, and while I was busy discovering new wild edibles, Ike played with the kids with the kite and frisbee. They entertained the kids for a bit, what Ike and Lee really wanted was to go to the beach.

We went to a different beach than we went to the first time, one closer to where we were staying, with bigger waves. I sent Mike back to our place to bring swim suits, towels, and the big beach umbrella.

The waves at this beach were so strong that when I put Anneliese sitting up high up the shoreline, out of the water, every once in a while, a big wave would come and wash over my baby's legs, startling her. She loved it!

We played in the water and played in the sand, building sand castles together.

Anneliese tasted sand. Icky!

Then we rushed back, as we were having a barbecue with friends at a nearby park. On the way home, I picked some samphire and purslane to prepare to serve at the barbecue. Also on the way home, Lee's sandals broke. Fortunately, it was his old sandals, not his new ones which I just bought a week and a half ago, but it was a problem. I was considering bringing along 2 pairs of shoes for the kids, but didn't, in an effort to "pack light", and then we were stuck with no shoes for Lee. Mike hand to carry him home. Lee came to the barbecue barefoot.

At the barbecue, we had grilled fish (gilthead bream- absolutely delicious) and hot dogs, as well as baked potatoes, purslane tomato salad, and the samphire.

The purslane tomato salad was a big hit with everyone. It had purlsane, tomatoes, lemon, salt, pepper, oil, and garlic powder.?

I really enjoyed the samphire, as did my family, but the?friends?with barbecued with weren't as much of a fan. I made my samphire dish by first blanching the samphire, then sauteing onions and garlic, then sauteing the samphire and adding some olive oil and balsamic vinegar and salt.?

The next day, (after eating rice cakes with peanut butter and jelly for breakfast), we chilled out where we were staying, then went to the mall to try to find Ike a pair of cheap shoes to wear for the duration of the trip. I really didn't like needing to buy shoes again after having just bought him new sandals exactly one week prior, but had no choice. We found relatively cheap ($15)?imitation?Crocs, which we bought for him, as they were the cheapest shoes we could find... (All other shoes we saw were minimum $40 dollars.)?

After a supper of miso soup (fermented soy miso- gluten free, msg free, wakame seaweed, rice noodles, and shitake mushrooms), we headed out to the boardwalk along the shore.
We ended up at the park along the boardwalk, where my kids played and played and played until it got dark.

A friend who lives in the area came by and joined us at the park, then came back with us to our place, where we talked until really late at night.

The next day, breakfast was PB&J rice cakes, and lunch was leftovers, and then we went home. For eating on the way home, I made rice paper wraps filled with veggies, hummus, mock tuna salad, and chicken breast. Due to traffic of one kind and another, what should have been a less than 3 hour trip home took us approximately 5 hours.

By the time we got home, we were exhausted and ready for bed.

Great vacation, great memories, but it's great to be back!

Do you enjoy going to beaches? How often do you go to the beach? If you have kids, do your kids like the beach?
What is your example of a perfect vacation?
What do you generally do about food when on vacation, especially if you have allergies? Do you bring along food from home? Buy in a grocery store while there? Buy ready made food, like sandwiches? Or do you go out to restaurants?
Any plans on vacationing this summer?
If you're a forager, do you forage on vacation, or do you take a vacation from foraging when away from home??

Benefits and drawbacks of flat roofing

Flat roofs are not necessarily flat; they really possess a slight incline to stop build-up of water. Leakages, splits, and also corrosion due to the rainwater can lead to lasting problems with your roof.

You can expect roofs that do develop a problem with "pooling" or "ponding" of rain water, to deteriorate that much faster. Yet another drawback to the flat roofing model is that in case it does begin to leak because of substandard water drainage, damage might result to the underside of the roof covering, which includes finished wood, ornamented ceilings as well as wall surfaces.

A flat roof structure demands much less material and time so is significantly cheaper to install when compared to a pitched rooftop but if it isn't routinely maintained it may possibly cost much more in repairs and maintenance in the long run.

Snowfall tends to collect rather than slide off on this particular form of roof top and flat rooftops collapse more commonly as opposed to others beneath the weight of the snow. This occurs a lot less often in the UK where we are not ordinarily subjected to large snow fall like many other places around the world.

A flat roof top will frequently make an ideal space to setup an eco friendly roof top or alternatively put in solar energy panels.

Flat roofs minimize energy cost within winter seasons but are not suitable for the summertime. As it absorbs more of the sun's heat than a pitched roof structure it can make your home even warmer.

Flat rooftops might have a shorter life-span than a pitched roof top based upon what products are used.

Sharp roofs very often create difficult wall space that can't be used inside of the house. Flat varieties reduce this trouble. Flat rooftops can make possible future floor additions less costly and simpler, if needed.

The products now used by a large percentage of reputable flat roofers have really improved and nowadays are generally tough and extremely technical. Roof top lights, fascias, cladding as well as rain water items are routinely employed along with insulating material to maximize the overall performance and life-time of newly installed roofs. It is always best to get help and advice from a reputable roofing company if you are planning to add single ply roofing to your house or shed.

3 Principles of Business Ethics

Business ethics is significant to any business. Whatever the size of your business, it will be of great help to the successful daily operation of your business if you have and adhere to a certain code of ethics. As a matter of fact, even experts say that business ethics can be considered to be the foundation of a leadership that is effective and successful.

However, you must note that the ethics govern not only the management of a business. Therefore, they apply not only those in the managerial and supervisory positions. Ethics should be practiced by the company at large, as a whole. They apply to the everyday dealings of employees with one another as well as with the clients. But unlike what other people may think, practicing ethics is not entirely easy.

Having Your Own Business Ethics Policy in the Company

There are a lot of advantages if you develop your own code of ethics or ethics policy in your business.

For one, it provides clear cut rules, principles and framework that should govern the behavior and conduct of all the employees in the company. This way, there will be minimal grey areas when it comes to company conduct. It will also be easier to solve employee problems and cases relating to ethics.

More than that, having a definitive and clear cut rules for business ethics through an ethics policy will also develop a higher sense of commitment and boost the morale of your employees as well. This, in turn, will lead to better and smoother operations which will eventually result in higher sales and profits for your company.

Nonetheless, the latter point should not be the sole purpose for having an ethics policy in your company.

When making an ethics policy, you should make it a point to see the bigger picture. Think of it this way: what is the responsibility of your business or company to the common good of the society? How should you relate to your community?

Business Ethics: Fundamental Principles

If this is your first time to draft a business ethics policy or code for your company, here are some of the fundamental principles you should bear in mind so you will be properly guided.

1. ?Purpose

What is your purpose for coming up with an ethics policy? To help you answer that, your purpose should be a combination of the vision of the company, and the values that you would like to be practiced or upheld at all times in your company. ?

2. ?Pride

Your ethics policy should make your employees and executives proud of your business or company. This is crucial since pride is one of the building blocks of self respect and dignity. And the latter are among the values that everyone in your business should have for the successful and smooth operation of your business.

3. ?Perspective

Your business ethics policy should give direction and perspective to your employees. It should be in accordance with the end goals of the company.

PARTS COST: About $50

TOOLS AND MATERIALS

? 9-volt battery clip
? 12 VDC 2000mA 2A switching power supply, 2.5-mm plug (optional)
? 8 AA battery holder; 8 AA batteries
? 6 feet 3.5-mm male-to-male stereo cable
? 2 Dayton Audio DAEX25 Sound Exciters (speakers)
? 1 Dayton Audio DTA-2 Class T Audio Amplifier Module
? 2 ferrite rings, ?-inch diameter
? 2 ceramic-disc capacitors
? Soldering iron
? Solder
? Loaded glue gun
? Boot box
? Duct tape (optional)

HOW TO BUILD IT

Wire the Amplifier

1. Place the amplifier on a work surface, flat side down; position the amp so that the row of four small holes is on the top edge.

2. Strip ? inch of the ends of the two battery-clip wires; slip the tips of the wires through two of the four holes closer to the amp's right corner, with the black wire in the outermost hole. Bend and then solder the tips to the flat side of the amp.

3. Pair two sets of the red-and-black wires included with the speakers; cut into 15-inch lengths. Strip ? inch of each wire tip, then loop each pair once around the rim of a ferrite donut.

4. Wrap a tip of one red and one black wire around the legs of a capacitor. Slip one leg through each of the holes next to those where the battery-clip wires are soldered. The wire colors must alternate: black, red, black, red. Solder the capacitor legs and wires to the amp. (This pair of wires feeds one of the speakers.)

5. Locate the two holes, about ? inch from the right side of the amp. Repeat Step 4, slipping the tip of a length of black wire through the hole marked with a minus (negative) sign, and a red wire tip through the other hole marked with a plus (positive) sign. Solder in place. (This pair of wires feeds the other speaker.)

Attach the Components Inside the Box

6. Apply glue to the flat side of the amp assembly, and stick it to the inside of one of the two larger faces of the boot box. Position the amp so that the switch-ribbon cable reaches the point on the side of the box where you will install the volume-control knob (step 9).

7. Using the self-adhesive tape on each exciter (speaker), affix them to the same face of the box as the amp. Clip the speakers to the two sets of wires attached to the capacitors.

8. Glue the battery pack near a lower corner inside the box. Attach the battery pack to the amp using the clip.

9. Remove the knob from the volume control (this is also the on/off switch). Poke a hole through a side of the box large enough to fit the stem of the volume control. Place the stem through the hole, reattach the knob, and glue the assembly to the inside of the box.

10. Plug one end of the switch ribbon into the amp and the other end into the volume-control unit. Glue down the ribbon.

11. Plug the ends of the speaker cable into the amp and the device that holds your music library.

Attach Your Device

12. Turn on your device with the volume on high, choose your favorite playlist, and press play. Close the box--and rock on!

Optional Steps

Add a handle made of duct tape; punch a hole in the box through which you can feed a switching power supply wire to the amp.

Aperture 3.3

Aperture has largely sat still over the past two years, occasionally tightening up the code and adjusting to new Mac OS capabilities, while Adobe's competing Lightroom pro photo workflow app has majorly improved. The latest point upgrade of Aperture, 3.3, does bring a few new interface tweaks, photo fixing tools, and native support for iPhoto libraries, but it still hasn't caught up with Adobe Lightroom ($149, 4.5 stars) in powerful, profile-based image corrections. And Lightroom is just the most important competitor in a growing field of pro photo-workflow software?ACDSee Pro ($129.99, 4 stars), CyberLink's PhotoDirector ($99.99, 3.5 stars), and Corel AfterShot Pro ($59.99, 2.5 stars).

Aperture's smooth user interface, Faces and Places features, plentiful output options, and good camera raw support do stand out, however. For Mac users who want a big step up in power from iPhoto, Aperture is a natural, and it's the only pro photo workflow app updated to support MacBooks with Retina displays and iCloud Photo Streams. But Lightroom goes further for the pro or very serious amateur, not only with its enforced workflow, but in the image corrections it offers, both basic and advanced.

Signup and Setup
As will all Apple software, Aperture 3.3 is only available through the Mac App Store. If you bought Aperture 3 on disc, you can upgrade through Apple Update. That means there's no longer a free trial download version, but when you buy the $79.99 app from the App Store, you'll be able to install it on up to five computers. Moving your photo editing from iPhoto to Aperture is easier than ever: Now when you first run the latter, you'll see a splash screen that asks if you want to use your iPhoto library for Aperture, without requiring an import of all the photos. In fact, with this update, your iPhoto (v9.3 or later) and Aperture libraries become one and the same. This will be key for Mac users with large iPhoto libraries in place. When I installed the update, however, a note told me that I wouldn't be able to use my library with previous versions of Aperture?no problem, I'm not going back!

I tested Aperture 3.3 on a MacBook with Retina Display, a recent iMac, and a three-year old MacBook. Performance was obviously excellent on the Retina MacBook. On the white MacBook with 2.6GHz dual core, the library update took 5 minutes, and then my MobileMe albums had to be moved. But performance during general program use wasn't so bad on the older machine, either.

Interface
Aperture's interface differs in a basic way from that of Lightroom (and most other photo workflow apps) in that it's not "modal." In Lightroom, the app has major task-related interfaces for Library, Develop, and more, while Aperture always uses the same interface. Its Inspector panel has tabs for Library, Info, and Adjust. This means you can navigate among your photos while making adjustments, without having to switch modes as you do in Lightroom. Some will prefer Lightroom's separation of tasks and enforcement of a workflow, while others will prefer Aperture's flexibility.

Aperture's find and filter tools do let you limit the thumbnail view in the library browser to very specific criteria, such as ISO or camera make or lens used, but Lightroom's search filters are snappier to use?you don't have to create a rule set the way you do in Aperture to get to the files you want. Just limiting the view to only video files should be much easier, as it is in many other photo applications.

Though Lightroom hasn't been customized for Retina MacBooks as Aperture has, you can simply view at the former's 1:2 proportion to see 1:1. And after a bit, I found that the Retina update wasn't such a big advantage for Aperture?I could work just as effectively in Lightroom, as long as I knew that 1:2 was actually 100 percent view. And the Lightroom image looked sharper than the same raw image in Aperture at 200 percent.

Version 3.3 makes some subtle but desirable changes to Aperture's user interface. The icons atop are now all monochromatic gray, and the colorful sharing icons (Facebook, Flickr) are now collapsed into a Share dropdown. This removes distractions from your image. But I still wish you could change the app's frame color from the outdated-looking light gray borders. The answer to this is Aperture's full-screen view. In full screen, you can adjust the background shade of gray to black.

My final interface note is that Aperture makes excellent use of keyboard shortcuts?something those who process a lot of photos can appreciate. But, again, the competition also features strong support for shortcuts.

LUMOback smart posture sensor hands-on (video)

Exclusive hands-on with the LUMOback smart posture sensor

We first met Andrew Chang -- one of the co-founders behind LUMOback -- when he approached us at the end of our panel at SXSW and offered to show us his smart posture sensor. He was wearing it right then and demoed it for us on the spot. We were impressed enough to stay in touch. Fast forward four months and the device has launched on Kickstarter and already surpassed its $100,000 funding goal. We recently caught up with Andrew to learn a little more about the device's evolution from mockup to pre-production and to get some hands-on time.

While we didn't get the chance to wear the smart posture sensor ourselves, Andrew gave us a thorough rundown and brought along various iterations of the device which you'll find in the photo gallery below. LUMOback is an 8.5mm thick appliance roughly the size of a credit card that's worn like a belt and rests against your lower back. It's packed with sensors, a vibration motor, an iOS-compatible Bluetooth 4.0 LE radio and a Li-Ion battery which provides about 4 days of operation on a charge. The only visible components are a single capacitive button, an LED and a micro-USB charging port. It's splash resistant and features an adjustable elastic strap.

The hardware may be interesting, but it's the software that really makes LUMOback useful. Paired with an iOS device over Bluetooth, the smart posture sensor monitors if you're running, walking, standing, sitting or laying down. When you're standing or sitting, it knows if you're slouching and optionally alerts you by vibrating. It even measures how much you're slouching and to which side, and knows if you're laying on your stomach, back, left or right side.
