Study reveals moderate doses of alcohol increase social bonding in groups

Monday, July 2, 2012

A new study led by University of Pittsburgh researchers reveals that moderate amounts of alcohol--consumed in a social setting--can enhance positive emotions and social bonding and relieve negative emotions among those drinking.

While it is usually taken for granted that people drink to reduce stress and enhance positive feelings, many studies have shown that alcohol consumption has an opposite effect. In a new paper titled "Alcohol and Group Formation: A Multimodal Investigation of the Effects of Alcohol on Emotion and Social Bonding," research shows that moderate doses of alcohol have a powerful effect on both male and female social drinkers when they are in a group.

The paper will be published in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

According to the researchers, previous alcohol studies testing the impact of alcohol on emotions involved social drinkers consuming alcohol in isolation rather than in groups.

"Those studies may have failed to create realistic conditions for studying this highly social drug," said Michael A. Sayette, lead author and professor of psychology in Pitt's Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences. "We felt that many of the most significant effects of alcohol would more likely be revealed in an experiment using a social setting."

Sayette and his colleagues assembled various small groups using 720 male and female participants, a larger sample than in previous alcohol studies. Researchers assessed individual and group interactions using the Facial Action Coding System (FACS) and the Grouptalk model for speech behavior.

They concluded that alcohol stimulates social bonding, increases the amount of time people spend talking to one another, and reduces displays of negative emotions. According to Sayette, the paper introduces into the alcohol literature new measures of facial expression and speech behavior that offer a sensitive and comprehensive assessment of social bonding.

Sayette and eight colleagues took special care in the methods they employed to form the groups. Each participant was randomly assigned to a group of three unacquainted "strangers." Each group was instructed to drink an alcoholic beverage, a placebo, or a nonalcoholic control beverage. Twenty groups representing each gender composition (three males; one female and two males; two males and one female; and three females) were assigned to the three different beverage scenarios. Group members sat around a circular table and consumed three drinks over a 36-minute time span. Each session was video recorded, and the duration and sequence of the participants' facial and speech behaviors were systematically coded frame by frame.

Results showed that alcohol not only increased the frequency of "true" smiles, but also enhanced the coordination of these smiles. In other words, alcohol enhanced the likelihood of "golden moments," with groups provided alcohol being more likely than those offered nonalcoholic beverages to have all three group members smile simultaneously. Participants in alcohol-drinking groups also likely reported greater social bonding than did the nonalcohol-drinking groups and were more likely to have all three members stay involved in the discussion.

"By demonstrating the sensitivity of our group formation paradigm for studying the rewarding effects of alcohol," said Sayette, "we can begin to ask questions of great interest to alcohol researchers? Why does alcohol make us feel better in group settings? Is there evidence to suggest a particular participant may be vulnerable to developing a problem with alcohol?"

The new research sets the stage for evaluation of potential associations between socioemotional responses to alcohol and individual differences in personality, family history of alcoholism, and genetic vulnerability.

(AP) ? Iran said Tuesday it test-fired several ballistic missiles, including a long-range variety meant to dissuade an Israeli or U.S. attack, alongside a push by Washington to beef up its military might in the region.

The powerful Revolutionary Guard's acting commander told state TV that the tests, aimed at mock enemy bases in a war games exercise, were a response to refusal by Israel and the U.S. to rule out military strikes to stop Iran's nuclear program.

"It is a response to the political impoliteness of those who talk about all options being on the table," Gen. Hossein Salami said.

The official IRNA news agency said the surface-to-surface missiles successfully hit their targets. The semi-official Fars said the salvos included the so-called Shahab-3 missile.

Iran has tested a variety of missiles in previous war games, including a Shahab-3 variant with a range of 2,000 kilometers that can reach Israel and southern Europe. The missiles are also capable of hitting U.S. bases in the region.

Iranian state TV showed video of several missiles being launched.

"So far, we have launched missiles from 300 to 1,300 kilometers (180 to 800 miles) in the maneuver," said Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh, who heads the Guard's aerospace division. He hinted that some missiles had an even longer range.

Israel is about 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) away from Iran's western borders, while the U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet is based in Bahrain, some 200 kilometers (120 miles) from Iranian shores in the Persian Gulf.

The Iranian commander quoted by Fars said Iran used both unmanned and manned bombers in the war games and was firing a variety of other missiles. Tehran says the drills aim to assess the accuracy and effectiveness of its warheads and weapons systems.

Tensions over Iran's nuclear program provided the backdrop.

In Washington, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said the U.S. remains "deeply concerned" over Iran's missile development. She said the drills are in violation of a U.N. Security Council resolution that "prohibits Iran from undertaking any activity related to ballistic missiles capable of delivering nuclear weapons."

A European Union oil embargo meant to pressure Iran over its nuclear program went into effect on Sunday.

The West suspects the Islamic Republic wants to build nuclear weapons, and Israel has hinted at an attack if diplomatic efforts and sanctions fail to eliminate what it sees as a direct threat.

Iran insists its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes, such as power generation and cancer treatment.

Meir Javedanfar, an Israeli expert on Iran at the Interdisciplinary Center Herzliya college, said the missile test was "first and foremost for domestic consumption."

"The Iranian regime has been saying for years that the Europeans can't live without Iran's oil. The imposition of sanctions and the fact that all of Europe has stopped buying Iranian oil has contradicted the message of the Iranian government," he said. "They need to maintain an image of strength with the people of Iran, and for now, these maneuvers are the best they can do," he added.

Iran's latest show of force comes as the United States ramps up its presence in the Gulf.

The Pentagon recently doubled the number of minesweepers in the region, giving the U.S. greater flexibility to counter any Iranian effort to mine the Strait of Hormuz at the mouth of the Persian Gulf.

The strait is routinely patrolled by Iranian and U.S. warships. Iran has repeatedly threatened to close the strategic waterway, which is the transit route for about a fifth of the world's oil supply, in retaliation for increased Western-led sanctions.

Lt. Cmdr. Kyle Raines, a spokesman for the 5th Fleet in Bahrain, said the four additional minesweepers arrived in the region on June 23. They join four similar ships normally assigned to the naval force.

He did not link their arrival directly to Iran, saying they are used to ensure commercial shipping can continue in international waters. But there was little doubt their presence is meant as a deterrent against any effort to mine the strait.

U.S. military commanders requested the additional minesweepers to provide "greater flexibility to support a wider range of possible contingencies and training," Raines said in an emailed response to questions.

Another ship, the USS Ponce, has also entered the 5th Fleet's area of operation, which includes the Gulf region, and is due to arrive in Bahrain later this week. It will add to the Navy's existing firepower in the region, where two aircraft carrier strike groups are also on patrol.

The Ponce was an amphibious transport dock that was recently retrofitted to become what is known as an afloat forward staging base. That effectively means it can act as a floating stop-off point for helicopters, patrol ships and special forces.

In addition to the naval presence, the U.S. military stations fighter jets and other aircraft at a number of air bases in friendly Arab nations across the Gulf from Iran. The Pentagon plans to keep 13,500 troops in Kuwait to give it the ability to respond to sudden conflicts in the region following the American military withdrawal from Iraq, according to a congressional report last month.

The study by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee said that in addition to ballistic missiles, Iran's conventional military includes 350,000 ground troops, 1,800 tanks and more than 300 fighter aircraft.

Scott Mendelson: Weekend Box Office: Ted, Magic Mike, and Madea's Witness Protection All Open Huge in 'Everybody Wins' Weekend

This weekend represented a shining example of the two best trends in mainstream moviegoing this year. ?As I wrote (here and here), we've seen a real upswing in both mid-to-low-budget mainstream fare that aren't especially 'tentpole-ish' as well as a huge upswing in the number of R-rated films being released by the major studios. ?As such, two of the four wide releases this weekend were both R-rated and all four were relatively small-scale and in 2D. ?That they mostly debuted to blockbuster numbers is an encouraging sign that not every movie need be a $150 million fantasy genre franchise entry. ?The top film of the weekend is also the best mainstream picture of the summer, as Seth MacFarlane's Ted?(review) debuted to a massive $54 million. ?That's the third-best debut for an R-rated comedy behind the $57 million opening of Sex and the City and the $87 million Fri-Sun debut of The Hangover part II.? Among non-sequel/spin-off R-rated comedies, it topped the $44 million record debut of The Hangover and is among the top-ten best R-rated debuts of all-time.?This is a massive win for all involved, bringing?Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane serious?film-making?clout, further confirming that Mark Wahlberg is an actual 'put butts in the seats' movie star and giving Universal something to laugh about. Speaking of Wahlberg, this is his second biggest opening behind the $68 million debut of Planet of the Apes back in 2001, and it needs only cross $133 million to supplant The Departed as his third-highest grossing film (Planet of the Apes and The Perfect Storm earned $180 million and $182 million respectively)

It's no secret that Universal has tried to play the mega-tentpole game this year, spending $210 million on Battleship (total worldwide cume: $300 million) while spending $175 million on Snow White and the Huntsman (which may make it to $400 million yet) with the possibly?disastrous?$175-million 47 Ronin waiting for next February (at that price, the Keanu Reeves action film will *have to* perform like a Matrix sequel). ?But Universal has always shined brightest when producing smaller-scale and/or old-school star vehicles, especially high-concept comedies along the lines of American Pie and Meet the Parents (yes, I know Meet the Parents is a remake of a French film, but you didn't see it either). ?It is comforting that they are still releasing movies like Ted (which made back its $50 million budget in three days) and Safe House ($202 million worldwide off a $85 million budget) plus the upcoming Savages, This Is Forty, and Les Miserables. ?The studio took a bath over the last few years as it went against the 'all tentpoles all the time' current while overspending on non-sure things like State of Play, The Wolfman, and Dream House while wildly?overspending?on would-be franchise pictures such as?Land of the Lost, Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World, and Cowboys Vs. Aliens. ?Occasional forays into franchises aside (Jurassic Park, The Mummy, The Fast and the Furious, The Bourne Identity), Universal has always been strongest when concentrating on old-school movies (think Bridesmaids, The Adjustment Bureau,?and American Gangster) and leaving the mega-tentpoles to Warner Bros. or Paramount. ?Anyway, back to Ted, it played 56 percent male and 52 percent 30 years old and over, with an A- from Cinemascore. ?It's a terrific comedy, a new classic I would argue, so I'm quite happy for its somewhat unexpected mega-success.

The next opener was an equally unexpected blockbuster, as Steven Soderbergh's male-stripper drama Magic Mike opened with $39 million, Soderbergh's biggest opening weekend ever. ?The Channing Tatum vehicle, his third major smash in 2012 (after The Vow and 21 Jump Street) proves that he too is a genuine box office draw. ?The film played heavily female, with?front-loading?on par with the first Sex and the City film. ?It opened with $19 million on Friday but dropped -41 percent on Saturday, suggesting that the film may be a one-weekend wonder (it had a frankly awful 2.1x weekend multiplier). ?But since Warner Bros. film cost just $7 million to produce (and around $20 million to market), who cares? ?This is going to be another mainstream smash for Steven Soderbergh and the only question is whether it can sustain enough legs to surpass the $75 million gross of Contagion and/or pass the $100 million mark. ?Ironically, since there is such a divide between Soderbergh's seventh-highest grossing film (Out of Sight with $37 million) and his sixth-biggest grosser (Contagion), Magic Mike may well end the weekend (or depending on final weekend figures, its fourth day) and its domestic run in the number six slot just past Out of Sight. ?Anyway, it's always encouraging when such an anti-blockbuster does big numbers (it's one of the reasons I have defended the Twilight Saga), so this is a win for all parties and arguably a win for all moviegoers in the long run.

Tyler Perry's Madea's Witness Protection was no slouch either, earning a scorching $26.4 million, giving Mr. Perry his fourth-biggest debut yet, behind Why Did I Get Married Too? ($29 million), Madea's Family Reunion ($30 million), and Madea Goes To Jail ($41 million). ?The only longterm question is whether it will end up closer to $50 million or $60 million and above. ?It's no secret that Perry isn't terribly fond of the Madea character, finding her costume and make-up uncomfortable and being somewhat unnerved by how she is?perceived?by fans and foes alike. ?But Madea is clearly Tyler Perry's flagship character, as efforts to break out of the mold, with the exception of the Why Did I Get Married? series, have resulted in his lowest-grossing efforts. ?Daddy's Little Girls ($31 million),?Good Deeds ($35 million),?The Family That Preys and For Colored Girls ($37 million each respectively) may be among Perry's better films, but they are all his lowest grossing films, followed by the $41 million-earning?Meet the Browns (where Madea had a heavily-touted cameo) and the awfully good I Can Do Bad All By Myself (earning $51 million, it's easily the best film featuring Madea). ?Like Adam Sandler prior to last year, Tyler Perry's films generally perform better the worse they are, while fans seemingly sniff out quality and stay away. ?Still, Perry is a multi-millionaire?and one of the most impressive success stories of the new?millennium, so hopefully Alex Cross (which frankly looks terrible) will help him finally put Madea to rest and move on to different projects.

The last new release was the lone turkey of the group, as Disney/Dreamworks' People Like Us struggled to earn $4.3 million. ?The directorial debut of writer Alex Kurtzman (The Island, The Legend of Zorro, Mission: Impossible III, Transformers, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Star Trek, Cowboys & Aliens) was touted as an old-school character-driven drama but the R-rated talking bear comedy and the R-rated male stripper dramedy got better reviews. ?Chris Pine, Elizabeth Banks, and Olivia Wilde may be media-friendly stars, but they surely are not 'box office' at this point. ?Still, the film cost just $16 million and it's the kind of title that will be a casual rental on DVD and will play forever in cable syndication. ?The two big limited release debuts are also two of the best films of 2012. ?Magnolia released Sarah Polley's Take This Waltz on an uncommonly large 31 screens, and the film earned $150,000, which is pretty solid for a film that's been on Video On Demand for the last month. ?More impressive was the four-screen debut of Fox Searchlight's The Beasts of the Southern Wild (review). The flat-out fantastic character drama/mythical journey earned around $42,309 on each of those four screens. ?Fox Searchlight is quickly expanding this one over the long holiday as it absolutely deserves your time and your money. ?Quite frankly, whether you end up liking it or not, anyone who doesn't make an effort to check it out over the next month loses all rights to complain about the kinds of movies being made today. ?In international debuts, The Amazing Spider-Man?(review) grossed $50 million in 13 territories while Ice Age: Continental Drift earned a whopping $78 million in its international debut (34 markets).

Instructional technology and college education ? Exponential Book

In this op-ed on the New York Times, Jeff Solingo, editorial director of the Chronicle of Higher Education points to a few concrete, urgent actions that universities and colleges across North America should take, in order to weather the financial crisis affecting institutions of higher education.

When it comes to education, I find myself consistently siding with the ?conservatives?. It is not that I dislike change per se ? quite the opposite, if anything; and there is no reason why teaching, and more generally the way society organizes and administer the education of its youths, should not be constantly evolving, in a way mirroring cultural and economic transformations. However, I also think that due to its very importance, education is something with which we should tinker as little as possible, and only when hard evidence warrants it. Making changes to the educational system requires time (measured in decades), not only in terms of sheer implementation, but especially when it comes to assessing their effectiveness.
The damage imparted by an educational reform ultimately deemed flawed, on a number of generations, is a terrible price to pay to social experimentation. This is why education leaders and politicians should adopt a healthy skepticism, and embrace the hippocratic ?First, do no harm? motto of medicine.

Perhaps this is why I am wary of some of the recipes suggested by Solingo in his op-ed, aimed at revitalizing college and university education and bringing it up to speed with a changed world. While I can only applaud his call for reclaiming ?academics as a top priority?, with a clear reference to the seemingly uncontrolled expansion of administrative expenses, which ?have grown faster than instruction on many campuses? [0], the umain point of his editorial is an exhortation to college and universities to embrace the use of technology in the classroom, as well as to offer more content online. There is a sense of urgency in Salingo?s recommendations, mostly because, according to him, universities have to ?catch up? quickly, following a decade of inaction (those dreadful nineties).

On these two points, I think that great caution should be exercised, lest we wish to go through decades of ineffective education, followed by decades during which we try and go back to the way things were. Make no mistake, I am not suggesting that the traditional model of education is perfect. It is entirely possible that classroom instruction, with which we have all grown up, that has existed for centuries and has served society well, is inexorably destined to become extinct, swept away by the information revolution that has been taking place before our eyes for the past two decades. It is entirely possible that two decades from now there will be no more classrooms, libraries, campuses, that education will be entirely online, that students everywhere will learn by watching content delivered remotely, or recorded, take tests on the internet and attend virtual graduations.

On the other hand, it is also entirely possible that none of that will happen.
Most of us agree that some, possibly a lot of human activities, will not go virtual any time soon, and may not go virtual ever, typically those based on some minimal level of interaction among individuals. And it is not as if there are no data justifying some skepticism. Online universities have existed for quite some time, and while they certainly have a place in the educational landscape, few people would contend that they represent an equally effective alternative to traditional classroom teaching.
The fact that a lot of reputable ?traditional? universities are offering more and more online courses, is no reason for every university to follow suit. Fads exist, in education like in any other human enterprise.
The experience of online realities (such as Second Life) is quite telling, in this respect. Second Life (SL) is now almost a decade old. It was launched among much hype, as a tool with the potential to open new horizons to education, commerce, research and what have you; multinationals, major high-tech firms such as Microsoft eagerly established a presence therein, for fear of being left behind what was branded as nothing short of a ?revolution? in the way business would be conducted. By now they have practically all pulled out. By all accounts, SL itself is in a state of abandon, after failing to deliver upon its promises; this is a telltale sign of the great challenges that going virtual poses.

While I agree that internet technology has a place in the broader context of college education, I remain convinced that campus-based institutions should make use of it sparingly, mostly as an aid to classroom-based instruction. Instead of trying to compete with them (a race to the bottom that traditional universities simply cannot win), universities should clearly differentiate themselves from for-profit online diploma mills. Great emphasis should be placed on the difference between learning and obtaining a degree, and on the superior educational experience of classroom-based instruction. The day we academics no longer believe that sitting in a classroom, listening to a person explaining and answering questions from other students, is the best way to learn, then we will know that universities as we know them have come to the end of the line. But until then, until hard data convincingly show that students learn more by going online instead of going to school, there is no reason for universities to try to increase online course content beyond what they are all already doing, other than to keep up with a fad.

Same goes for instructional technology. At this point in time, at least in North America the use of computer technology in and out of the classroom, for example, is no novelty anymore. I was an enthusiastic early adopter in 1996, and have made extensive use of it myself since, and while I am the first to admit that it renders some aspects of teaching easier, chiefly the running and administration of large-enrolment courses, its real effectiveness in terms of content delivery and learning should not be exaggerated.
My personal observation is that students do not learn more and/or more quickly just because widgets, movies, animations, online lecture notes and power point presentations are put at their fingertips. None of these things are replacements for attending lectures, reading the textbook, thinking about concepts on one?s own, discussing them with instructors and fellow students, doing the homework. Students who are willing to put the time, do well, those who are not do not ? no technology will change that state of affairs, making a video game of education is not the way to go.
How much ?technology? is needed is a choice that universities and colleges should leave to the individual instructors. Any general policy or guideline, attempting to shove preconceived notions of what teaching should be down the throat of those who face students every day, is wrong-headed (if that is being ?conservative?, fine, call me one).

Notes

[0] If anything, I wish that Solingo had devoted a much greater share of his editorial to this aspect, seeing by many of us as the most important issue with modern time academia (see here for instance) instead of a single, cautious paragraph, bordering on the perfunctory.
