Video: SCOTUS rejects Montana campaign finance limits

>>> the high court doubling down on citizens united , the 2010 ruling that unleashed corporate spending on political campaigns . in a 5-4 vote, the court dismissed an attempt bit state of montana to limit campaign donations. the majority wrote, the question presented in this case is whether the holding of citizens united applies to the montana state law. there can be no serious doubt that it does. that means that citizens united can be broadly applied to any state and local elections , opening them up to unlimited campaign cash. for more on it, let me bring back senior political editor mark murray . this comes after the op-ed on the casino mogul who backed newt gingrich and now mitt romney . since he made it clear he's fully willing to exploit the anything goes world created by the federal courts to donate limitless portions of his $25 billion fortune to defeat the president and as many democrats as he can take down, we talked about many in wisconsin recently as well. this conversation not going anywhere, but the supreme court , in words, i guess we can put it this way, doubling down on its ruling before.

>> tamron, another way to put it is sentenced united is here to stay. this montana case provided the court with the ability to perhaps revisit citizens united after that decision in 2010 , particularly when the minority on the court -- the more liberal leaning justices, thought what would end up happening after citizens united created this wild west version of campaign finance where people like sheldon adelson , very rich donors, have the ability to influence elections more than people. in this particular case today as well as in citizens united in 2010 , for -- applicable to campaign finance at corporations have the right to be able to speak and to be able to air advertisements and spend almost as much money as they want to spend in the campaign.

>> to your point, mark, the five justices who -- showed no signs of budging. all sides have come to understand the importance f that is the proper word of the super pacts and this big money now.

>> well, right now, in the two years since citizens united , you can say republicans are playing the super pac, the post citizens united world game much better than democrats. you look, you mentioned sheldon adelson , look at the republican super pacs, the karl rove founded group, crossroads or crossroads gps, the super pacs supporting romney, restore our future, they have a tremendous amount of money. they're going to be able to impact this presidential contest. you end up having president obama 's own super pac, priorities usa action, but they haven't been able to flood the air ways the same way we have seen from the republican groups. so far this citizens united decision, which was, again, upheld today, has really been a boon to the republican party so far.

>> your thoughts on this. four game changers left that we'll be watching. health care law ruling, perhaps thursday, romney's vp pick and convention speeches and the unemployment number before the election here. we're narrowing down the things that i guess average americans, not those in the beltway, not those paid to give their opinions on these things, will be certainly tuning in to see.

>> well, right. and it also shows we have a very long way to go in this general election . as you mentioned we are going to get the supreme court decision on thursday. we have so many more twists and turns to go, whether mitt romney 's vice presidential pick, the upcoming conventions, you mentioned that final unemployment number as well as -- i think these will be the more impactful, upcoming debates. and, tamron, all the external events, something could come out of the blue like we saw with lehman brothers on september 15th , 2008 , that can shape a presidential contest without people even thinking that actually it could occur.

>> mark murray , thank you very much. greatly appreciate it. and

ICS now officially available for AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II

ICS now officially available for AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II

While it's true a few lucky AT&T Galaxy S II owners were able to get their hands on the official upgrade to Android 4.0 just a matter of days ago, the company wasn't ready to push it out to the masses quite just yet. The initial tests must've gone as good as hoped, however, because AT&T is now ready to make ICS publicly available to anyone willing to go through Kies to grab it. Indeed, the one drawback to this wonderful news is the fact that ICS doesn't just come to you... you need to go to it. As in, no over-the-air capabilities. The silver lining to that, though, is that this may actually work out better for anyone that feels better off sticking with the tried-and-true Gingerbread TouchWiz experience. On a sidenote, AT&T also reaffirmed its commitment to bringing the next version of Android to more devices this summer, but refused to specify which ones we can look forward to. Head below (or check out the source link) to learn how to grab the update.

(AP) ? River Highlands has been the sight of the first PGA Tour win for four of its last six tournament champions.

Roland Thatcher and Englishman Brian Davis would like to make it five of seven.

Davis shot a 6-under 64, and Thatcher had a 65 on Saturday to share the third-round lead in the Travelers Championship at 12 under.

Davis said he's not sure why this tournament, which comes a week after the U.S. Open, has been so good to relative unknowns.

"Obviously, some of the big players aren't here, but there is still a really good field here," Davis said. "It's just one of them things. I've had a couple of weeks off, maybe I'm not as tired as the other guys. But, I'll take my win anywhere. I don't care where it is."

Davis made an early move, shooting a 29 on the front nine with six birdies. Thatcher overtook him with three straight birdies on the back nine and had a one-stroke lead before missing a 7-foot par putt on the 17th hole.

"I executed just really well in that stretch," Thatcher said. "It's easy to say they're easy holes, and that's what you should do, but you still have to execute."

Seventeen other players were within five strokes of the lead entering the final round.

John Rollins, James Driscoll and Stuart Appleby were two strokes back. Defending champion Fredrik Jacobson, who led after two rounds, shot an even-par 70 to remain at 9 under.

Davis said his fast start was helped by the thunderstorms that pushed the finish of the second round to Saturday morning and softened up the greens.

"I didn't even realize I had shot 29," said Davis, who has been a runner-up on the PGA Tour five times. "I was just playing and everything was going right. Then obviously we hit the turn and we had the wind pick up for about three holes and it was playing tough all of the sudden."

The first-time winners at River Highlands include Jacobson last year, Bubba Watson (2010), Hunter Mahan (2007) and J.J. Henry (2006).

But Thatcher said he's not worried about that.

"I figure when I play well, I'll play well and hopefully it's going to be enough to keep the job every year," he said. "This week will go a long way towards that."

Appleby, by contrast, is looking for his 10th tour win after making just one bogey in his round. The 41-year-old Australian said he's happy to be considered the old veteran among the young guns vying for the championship.

"It would be good to get back in the winner's circle, he said. "The only cut I've made has been shaving for a long time. I played better golf when I was a rookie out here, and that's just not right."

Jacobson recovered from a bogey on 17 to birdie the final hole and stay within striking distance as he attempts to join Phil Mickelson, the 2001 and 2002 winner, as the only players to successfully defend a title at River Highlands.

"I'm really happy being three behind going into tomorrow rather than five or six," he said. "I'll take the positives."

Watson also is in the mix, one of four players at 8-under par. He had a 15-foot birdie putt to go 10-under at the 17th hole, but hit the ball five feet past the hole and then missed the return shot.

"It broke about 6 feet, maybe a gust of wind or something, and then when I putted it back up it either bounced or broke right and it shouldn't do that, obviously, because it went one way and then the other," Watson said.

Seventy-seven players spent Saturday morning finishing their second rounds after thunderstorms halted play early on Friday.

J.B. Holmes, who underwent brain surgery last September, finished the morning with 62, the second best round of his career. But he followed that a few hours later with a 75 and was nine strokes behind the leaders.

Camilo Villegas shot a second round 64 and shot 70 on Saturday afternoon. Villegas, who has three top-25 finishes this season, was four behind the leaders.

"It's nice to see my name up on the leader board," he said. "It's been a tough year and it's always good to play good."

Eighty-eight players made the cut at even par. But former UCLA star Patrick Cantlay wasn't among them. He shot a 67 on Saturday morning to finish 2 over in the first tournament of his professional career.

"I struggled on the first day and never really recovered," he said.

Colorado town evacuated as wildfire nears

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) ? A wildfire near Colorado Springs erupted and grew out of control to more than 3 square miles over the weekend, prompting the evacuation of a popular vacation town and the closure of nearby highways Sunday.

At least 11,000 residents of the town of Manitou Springs and nearby communities of Cascade, Chipita Park and Green Mountain Falls were ordered to leave Saturday or early Sunday. The resort communities include campgrounds, inns, rental cabins and other vacation properties that were emptied, though it wasn't immediately clear how many people those evacuations included.

The fire quickly grew to more than 2,000 acres amid tinder dry conditions, gusty winds and temperatures that reached into the 90s.

It also prompted evacuations for the west side of Colorado Springs and in the towns of Cascade and Ute Pass, but no structures have been destroyed and no buildings were under immediate threat.

The Garden of the Gods park, which has dramatic red rock formations, was also closed. Officials also closed traffic into Manitou Springs, a vacation town at the base of Pikes Peak, and shut down the Pikes Peak Highway, which goes to the top of the mountain.

Manitou Springs fire department's chaplain and public information officer, the Rev. David Hunting, said the orders were precautions because "fires can change their behavior dramatically" in such weather conditions.

In some neighborhoods, police cruisers rolled down streets, issuing the order to leave through a loudspeaker.

"Colorado Springs Police Department," an officer said. "This is a mandatory evacuation notice. Evacuate now."

Hundreds of other residents were under voluntary evacuation orders and were packing up, the Colorado Springs Gazette reported Saturday.

About 350 firefighters were dispatched to the blaze, with more in the way, said Rob Deyerberg of the Fairmount Fire Protection District. But the fire remained zero percent contained as it burned through the night.

Pikes Peak, which stands more than 14,100 feet high and is the most popular mountain in the country for climbers, was completely covered by grayish smoke by Sunday morning.

Crews were expected to contend with similarly hot and gusty weather on Sunday. The National Weather Service said temperatures were forecast to be close to 100 degrees throughout much of the state.

Colorado and other parts of the Southwest have become a tinderbox for wildfires as the region faces extremely dry or prolonged drought conditions. At least seven were burning across the state, where officials have been challenged by one of the most severe fire seasons in recent memory.

The weather also helped fuel another blaze that sparked Saturday and destroyed 21 structures near the mountain community of Estes Park. Investigators were determining whether it started in a cabin or as a wildfire before moving toward the homes, according to the Denver Post.

"Even though we lost 21 (structures), which is a huge tragedy, we saved many homes because of firefighters' efforts," Estes Park Fire Chief Scott Dorman told evacuees.

A separate fire continued burning near Fort Collins, scorching more than 118 square miles and destroying at least 191 homes. That blaze has become the largest and most expensive in Colorado history.

Elsewhere in the West, firefighters made progress against wildfires in Utah, New Mexico and California.

? In Utah, about 2,300 residents were allowed to return to their homes Saturday after officials determined a wildfire no longer posed a threat to homes near Saratoga Springs and Eagle Mountain. Officials believe that fire was started Thursday by target shooters. A second major fire has burned 16,500-acres of high desert near the central Utah town of Delta.

? In California, a wildfire about 60 miles north of Los Angeles triggered evacuations of campgrounds around an off-road recreation area on Saturday. Ventura County fire officials said the fire has blackened at least 400 acres in the Hungry Valley State Vehicular Recreation Area, along the Interstate 5 corridor in Gorman.

? In New Mexico, a lightning-caused wildfire that destroyed 242 homes and businesses is 90 percent contained after heavy rain helped crews Friday. The 69-square-mile fire near Ruidoso began June 4. Meanwhile, the largest wildfire in state history was 87 percent contained. It has burned more than 464 square miles after two blazes merged on May 16.

Nadya Suleman Gets Second Class Treatment

Nadya Suleman aka Octomom claims she got less than first class treatment, or maybe even less than coach class treatment on a recent flight — all because she is the legendary mother of multiples. So what happened? Well, TMZ reported today that Suleman was complaining about being singled out by the flight crew of a Virgin Atlantic flight. She was apparently traveling with her manager Gina Rodriguez when the unthinkable happened. So why is it news that a pseudo-celeb gets treated like garbage? Well, because it seems like Octomom has finally realized that the only way she can make money off of her so-called celebrity status is to get grimy. She has explored stripping and allegedly even the adult films industry, so this is just another example of her image heading for the bottom of the barrel. Reports state that she was flying from California to New York when she noticed that the airline crew figured out who she was. That’s when she says they started messing with her. Octomom states that she never got her drinks and was forced to play musical plane seats for no reason. The woman traveling with her that she apparently calls a “manager” says [...]

Taliban siege at Kabul hotel kills at least 23

NATO UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters fly near the Spozhmai Hotel in Qargha lake in the outskirts of Kabul in the early hours of Friday.

By Cheryll Simpson, NBC News in Kabul, and Reuters

Updated at 7:38 a.m. ET Friday: KABUL ? Guests swam for their lives after five Taliban gunmen attacked a lakeside hotel in Afghanistan, killing at least 18 people and taking 50 others hostage in a siege lasting several hours, according to reports.

At least five militants armed with rocket-propelled grenades and heavy machine guns attacked the exclusive Spozhmai hotel in the Qargha Lake recreation area around midnight local time on Thursday (3:30 p.m. ET) bursting into a private party and shooting dead hotel workers.?

The local police chief told NBC News that all five insurgents were killed. The Associated Press quoted local police as saying the civilian death toll was 18 - including hotel guards and a policeman - and likely to climb.?

Many terrified guests jumped into the lake in darkness to escape the carnage, according to Afghan officials and local residents.

Reuters journalist Hamid Shalizi reported there were "a number" of casualties, and that the guests were a party of wealthy Afghans.

NBC News producer Cheryll Simpson reported via Twitter that heavy gunfire could be heard from the hotel, which is about six miles from the center of Kabul.

Ahmad Jamshid / AP

More than ten years after the beginning of the war, Afghanistan faces external pressure to reform as well as ongoing internal conflicts.

The Afghan Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, saying the hotel was used for "prostitution, alcohol and immorality,"?she reported.

Elite Afghan quick-response police backed by NATO troops had freed the remaining hostages and killed the gunmen in an operation that only began in earnest after sunrise to help security forces avoid unnecessary civilian deaths in night-time confusion.

Two NATO attack helicopters could be seen over the single-story hotel building and a balcony popular with guests for its sunset views.

'Crime against humanity'
The incident again highlighted the ability of the Afghan Taliban to stage high-profile attacks even as NATO nations prepare to withdraw most combat troops by the end of 2014, leaving Afghan forces to take the lead against the insurgency.

Authorities are about midway through a transition process during which security responsibility is being handed from NATO-led foreign troops to Afghan forces.

"This is a crime against humanity because they targeted children, women and civilians picnicking at the lake. There wasn't even a single soldier around there," said General Mohammad Zahir, head of the Kabul police investigation unit.

A pall of smoke hung over the hotel and television pictures showed people wading out of the lake onto a balcony and clambering over a wall to safety.

Police and soldiers fanned out around the hotel at dawn, arriving in cars and armored Humvee vehicles and taking cover behind trees flanking the lake and a nearby golf course.

Resident Nasir Ahmad said his brother, who worked in the Spozhmai hotel, the most exclusive of several around the scenic lake, told him many people had been killed.

Qargha Lake is one of Kabul's few options for weekend getaways. Restaurants and hotels that dot the shore are popular with Afghan government officials and businessmen, particularly on Thursday nights.

Guests at the Spozhmai must pass through hotel security before entering the hotel, where tables with umbrellas overlook the water, but security is relatively light for a city vulnerable to militant attacks.

Targets include foreigners
Violence across Afghanistan has surged in recent days, with three U.S. soldiers and more than a dozen civilians killed in successive attacks, mostly in the country's east where NATO-led forces have focused their efforts during the summer fighting months.

Several well-planned assaults in Kabul in the past year have raised questions about whether the Taliban and their al Qaeda-linked Haqqani network allies have shifted tactics to embrace high-profile attacks targeting landmarks, foreigners and Afghanistan's elite, extending a guerrilla war once primarily waged in the countryside.

Afghan insurgents attacked Kabul's heavily protected diplomatic and government district on April 15 in an assault, eventually quelled by Afghan special forces guided by Western mentors, similar to one in September 2011.

President Hamid Karzai told a special session of parliament on Thursday that attacks by insurgents against Afghan police and soldiers were increasing as most foreign combat troops prepare to leave Afghanistan by the end of 2014.?
