5 Low-Calorie Beverages - adelinesuarez87's blog

Find out which healthier options you can swap in for high-calorie drinks

?soda

Could you be sipping a meals? worth of calories between meals? Though some beverages may seem innocent enough, liquid calories tend to add up fast?and can easily skyrocket your daily intake without you even realizing it. These simple switches will help you trim the fat while enjoying your favorite types of drinks.

Drink plain coffee instead of a latte:

Could your morning latte be to blame for your stalled weight-loss efforts? Since many flavored coffee drinks contain 400 calories or more, it could be the culprit. Next time, survey your coffee options before you sip, or simply skip all the fancy creams and flavored syrups and go with a plain cup of joe. If desired, you can add your own sweeteners, cream or flavoring?but you?ll be able to control the portions and the calories by doing it yourself.

Drink a low-cal energizing drink mix instead of an energy drink:

These days, the grocery store coolers are lined with dozens of varieties of sugar- and caffeine-infused energy drinks. The cans claim numerous ?energizing? benefits, and these drinks may even contain added vitamins, but all you?re really getting is a hefty dose of caffeinated sugar water (and hundreds of calories to boot). If you want the energy without the added calories, try a flavorful drink mix (like Crystal Light Energy). It gives you a boost thanks to added caffeine but contains a minimal amount of calories and zero added sugar. Add a packet to your water bottle, or mix it with seltzer for a fizzy, low-calorie treat.

Drink unsweetened tea instead of sweet tea.

Tea has countless health benefits by itself, but you?re not doing yourself any favors by loading it up with hundreds of calories of added sugar. Tea tastes wonderful in its natural state; it sometimes just takes some getting used to! If you usually drink sweetened tea (iced or hot), slowly cut back on the amount of sugar you add over the course of a few weeks until you?re ready to drink it straight. When ordering sweet tea from a restaurant (where they?ve already added the sweetener for you), ask for an extra cup of water so you can water it down as you wean yourself off the sugar. There are many herbal teas you can brew that have a natural sweetness thanks to dried fruits and sweet-tasting herbs. While it might not be as sweet as sweet tea, natural tea has a unique and refreshing taste that you might learn to love over time if you give it a chance.

Drink Seltzer Instead of Soda:

It?s hard to avoid soda. Most of us probably see some kind of soda advertisement or bottle several times per week, whether it be at a gas station, grocery store, or social function. Soda packs a hefty caloric punch that adds up fast: A typical 24-ounce bottle can contain up to 500 calories! If you crave the fizz soda, try drinking calorie-free seltzer water with a spritz of lime or a small splash of juice for some added flavor and sweetness. You?ll slash your calorie and sugar consumption while still getting your bubbly fix.

Drink Mocktails Instead of Cocktails:

It?s fine to let loose and have a few drinks with friends, but remember that not all alcohol is created equal. Toss back a few sugary margaritas and you?re looking at consuming nearly 1,000 calories?and that?s before you even touch the deep-fried bar food! To scale back on your alcohol calories, avoid frozen or blended drinks, as they tend to contain the most sugars and flavorings. Instead, stick with dry wine or liquor mixed with soda water, low-calorie drink packets, or another low-calorie mixer. If you?re pouring the drinks yourself, keep an eye on serving sizes: 12 ounces for beer, 5 ounces for wine, and just 1.5 ounces for liquor.

A new model to understand the supertasting phenomenon

Supertasting describes the ability to strongly detect food flavors such as bitter and sweet, and it can affect a person's food preferences. For example, supertasters are often averse to green vegetables because their bitter taste is amplified. Supertasters may also prefer foods lower in sugar and fat. Approximately one out of four people is a supertaster, and a supertaster's avoidance of sweet and fatty foods may have protective cardiovascular effects.

Christopher Nosrat and colleagues at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Pennsylvania have developed a new mouse model that may be useful to study supertasting. The team's work was reported in the Journal of Biological Chemistry.

Nosrat's group developed mice whose taste buds overexpress brain-derived neurotrophic factor, a growth factor for neurons and a protein that is important for the distribution of nerves to sensory organs, such as taste buds. These mice had larger taste buds, an increased number of taste cells per taste bud, and a greater supply of nerves in the taste buds compared with the control mice. These features suggest that the mice could be a model for supertasters, whose tongues have an increased number of fungiform taste buds (a specific kind of taste bud on the front and sides of the tongue that detects the five basic tastes).

"By generating the supertaster rodent model," Nosrat reports, "we are able to study the supertasting phenomenon in detail." Furthermore, brain-derived neurotrophic factor is important for proper development of the nervous system, Nosrat explains, and this mouse model can facilitate the development of therapies for nerve injuries in which taste signaling to the brain has been damaged.

Our microbes, ourselves: Billions of bacteria within, essential for immune function, are ours alone

ScienceDaily (June 21, 2012) ? Gut bacteria's key role in immunity is tuned to the host species, researchers have found, suggesting that the superabundant microbes lining our digestive tract evolved with us -- a tantalizing clue in the mysterious recent spike in human autoimmune disorders.

A new study reports that the superabundance of microbial life lining our GI tracts has coevolved with us. These internal bacteria, which are essential for a healthy immune system, are ultimately our evolutionary partners. In other words, humans may have co-evolved with gut bacteria unique to humans, which are not immunologically functional in other mammals.

This study, the first to demonstrate that microbes are specific to their host species, also sheds light on what's called 'the hygiene hypothesis.' According to this idea, living in increasingly hyper-hygienic environments might contribute to recent spikes in childhood allergies, as these beneficial host-specific microbes are hindered by the plethora of antibacterial home products and cleaning chemicals.

"For every cell in your body that is you, that contains your specific genetic information, there are approximately nine foreign bacterial cells, primarily in your digestive tract and even on your skin," said Dennis Kasper, HMS professor of microbiology and immunobiology and senior author on the paper. "From the viewpoint of cell count, every human being is ninety percent microbial. Now we've found that these bacteria, which we need for optimal health, are species specific."

This paper will appear in the June 22 issue of Cell.

That 500 to 1,000 microbial species inhabit mammals has long been documented. Researchers have suggested that when it comes to digestion and other metabolic activities, the particular species of bacteria may not be significant provided the bacteria contain specific, helpful genes. In other words, a bacterium that breaks down food in the mouse gut can probably do the same in the human.

But the microbes that fortify our immune system have not been studied in this regard. Are they functionally unique, or would any species suffice?

To address this question, Hachung Chung, a postdoctoral researcher in Kasper's lab, studied two groups of mice, both of which had been bred to lack microbial flora. For one group, she introduced microbial species that are natural to mice, and to the second, she introduced human microbes.

For both groups of mice, an equal quantity of microbes, and an equal diversity of species, soon flourished in their digestive tracts.

But despite this apparent similarity, when Chung examined the intestinal tissue, including intestinal lymph nodes, of mice from each of the two groups, she discovered that the mice with humanized microbes had surprisingly low levels of immune cells, levels equivalent to mice who lacked intestinal bacteria all together.

"Despite the abundant and complex community of bacteria that were in the human flora mice, it seemed like the mouse host did not recognize the bacteria, as if the mice were germ-free," said Chung.

Chung repeated the experiment, only this time populating a third group of mice with microbes common to rats. This new group showed the same immune system deficiency as the humanized mice. "I was very surprised to see that," Chung said. "Naturally, I would have expected more of a half-way response."

In a third experiment, Chung infected all the mice with salmonella. Almost from day one, the mice with human flora showed significantly higher levels of salmonella in their system than the mice with normal flora. The immune systems of the mice with human flora were effectively incapable of fending off the pathogenic bacteria.

"This raises serious questions regarding our current overuse of antibiotics, as well as ultra-hygienic environments that many of us live in," said Kasper. "If the bacteria within us are specific to us and necessary for normal immune system function, then it's important to know if we are in fact losing these vital bacteria. Are we losing the bacteria we have coevolved with? If that is the case, then this is yet further evidence supporting the idea that the loss of good bacteria is partly to blame for the increased rates of autoimmunity that we are now seeing."

This work was funded by the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America, the Danish Council for Independent Research | Natural Sciences, the National Institutes of Health (grant F32 AI091104), and by an NIH Director's Pioneer Award (DP1OD000964).

Prelude to a Catastrophe: "Something Dramatic"

The earthquake activity at Mount St. Helens had built to a crescendo. When a volcano shakes this hard, it almost always spells trouble: magma rising, an eruption imminent. You can?t know exactly what they are going to do, and when, and to what degree. But you suspect. You prepare as best you can.

On March 27th, the USGS issued a Hazards Watch, informing public officials of the dangers St. Helens might pose. After a week of increasing shakes, there was little doubt in any scientist?s mind that ?something dramatic? was about to happen. By 11:20am Pacific Standard Time, something dramatic had.

It must have been eerie for the observer in the Army National Guard plane who first saw the gaping hole in her formerly-pristine summit. A dark gray streak of ash stained the snow, following the winds to the southeast. The deep snow had cracked. She was awake. And it wouldn?t be long before she let folks know she was feeling feisty.

At 12:36pm, a boom echoed through the wilderness near the volcano. Portland reporter Mike Beard, flying above her, saw ash roiling ?like smoke out of a chimney? through the clouds.

When volcanoes erupt, many people think lava. Lots of lava. And that is true for some volcanoes, like the lovely shields that make Hawaii such an interesting place to live. But a volcano like St. Helens doesn?t start with lava. She begins by clearing her throat, so to speak, gargling a bit, putting on a small performance before the main event. In her case, thick, sticky dacite, a type of magma rather rich in silica, was making its laborious way up toward the surface. Dacite has a tendency to form domes. It also has a distressing tendency to blow up. But the rising dacite hadn?t reached the surface just yet: it had just gotten close enough that its heat flashed water to steam. The result was a phreatic (steam) eruption, strong enough to break and pulverize summit rock and blow a hole in the top. Steam and ash gave Mike Beard a jolly good show, and made a racket. But no lava. Not yet.

Still. The phreatic eruptions caused some pretty dramatic changes.

Viewed from north, thermal area A, near The Boot, is covered by snow, but its location corresponds to shallow dimple in snow surface. Photo by D. Frank. Skamania County, Washington. March 24, 1980. Portion of Figure 149-A, U.S. Geological Survey Professional paper 1250.

Three days before, all had been serene snowfields. Cascades volcanoes tend to look like ice cream cones, with their steep rounded shapes and their deep white coats. Mount St. Helens, for all the seismic excitement, was still a perfect example of the type.

Nothing would ever be the same again.

Oblique aerial photograph of summit of Mount St. Helens, looking south. Location of thermal area A indicated. Note that the new fractures cross ice and rock areas with no apparent change of style, indicating the fractures are deep seated. Photo by D. Frank. Skamania County, Washington. March 27, 1980. Portion of Figure 150, U.S. Geological Survey Professional paper 1250.

Compare the two photos above. They?re the same area. They hardly look it.

The afternoon that had started with a bang continued on a sustained dramatic note. At 2:00pm, seismologists at the University of Washington watched their equipment register a hefty magnitude 4.7 earthquake, the second-strongest of the swarm. They couldn?t see events on the mountain, but others witnessed a gigantic black plume unfurling to a respectable 7,000 feet (2,133 meters). Earthquakes during the eruption happened at such a frequency that seismologists had trouble telling them apart on the graphs. David Gibney, an aerial spotter for the United States Forest Service, saw fractures open and close, the north flank break and rise, as he flew over in the hours after that first eruption. Think of that: a mountain, hurling ash and steam, cracking and breaking beneath your gaze. Something dramatic, indeed.

At the end of that opening sequence, Mount St. Helens sported a crater 200-250 feet (60-75 meters) across nestled within the old, ice-choked summit crater. The summit had been cracked like an egg, split open by an eastward-trending fracture that slashed her flanks from northwest to northeast, a gash measuring nearly 5,000 feet (1500 meters) in length. Other fractures ran alongside it. They defined the south side of an uplifted block, possibly already pushing outward, on her north flank.

The Bulge had been born.

Annotations: north and west sides of the mountain are marked; a curved arrow shows the continuing movement of the the north side bulge; dotted lines show the approximate edges of the summit graben; double-headed arrow illustrates extension across the graben. Windows Phone 8 to start on HTC, Huawei, Nokia and Samsung devices with support for 180 countries

When Windows Phone 8 arrives in the fall, it will have a relatively narrow slice of hardware makers: HTC, Huawei, Nokia and Samsung will represent the first wave. That's excluding some significant partners that have surfaced even over the past year, including ZTE. When they do ship, though, all of them will be using new Qualcomm processors; we have a hunch that's code for Snapdragon S4 variants. There certainly won't be any shortage of regional support with apps available over 180 countries and 50 languages accounted for -- more than Apple mentioned as attached to iOS 6, Microsoft is keen to add. While the number of hardware launches isn't likely to come that close anytime soon, it does mean that phone designers will have considerable more flexibility as to where they launch.

To check out the latest updates from Microsoft's Windows Phone event, visit our liveblog!

Update: Not to miss a good opportunity, Huawei has issued a press release to announce that its Ascend Windows Phone 8 handset will launch first in the US, Europe and China, with other countries to follow. You'll find the full spiel after the break.

Open House Review: 10 Windflower - Irvine Real Estate & Irvine ...

A Winning Viewpoint:? 10 Windflower, $1,350,000

In my last two Open House Reviews, I visited million dollar Turtle Rock properties and I wondered how a third property might compare. ?I found an intriguing answer at 10 Windflower.

Last week I saw the possibilities of 11 Bethany with a 90% remodel and quality upgrades. The week before I saw the potential in 18762 Via San Marco with a 10,000 sq. foot lot and multi bay window views ?of a private green hillside.

Now, as I walked up to 10 Windflower, I was looking for a competing viewpoint.

The house has a substantial presence from the street. Inside a bright inviting living room with a custom fireplace is on the right and a formal dining room is off to the left.? Continuing through the home, a large kitchen with a butler area is on the left. There?s a breakfast nook in the center and a large family room on the right.?

?But when you reach the back of the house you really begin to appreciate what this home offers. Positioned on one of the highest points in Turtle Rock, one view after another blends into a panorama overlooking Shady Canyon, Bommer Canyon? and Turtle Ridge.? Morning light over coffee, afternoon breaks, glowing sunsets, and evenings skies are all part of the package here.? A fire pit and Jacuzzi complete the backyard refuge.

The floor plan and the overall finish of the house have a clear, direct feel, but the view confirms the property?s appeal.? For the right buyer this is perfect solitude or really great entertaining, made to order.?

Oak flooring, new sisal like carpet, ?strategic skylights, the butler service area off the dining room, a good sized computer? area near the kitchen, and three custom fireplaces round out the house?s appeal.

A custom staircase leads to four bedrooms and 2 baths upstairs. All are well done, but the master bedroom is a stand out.? ?That same view so nicely framed downstairs has been reframed in the master bedroom with a sitting area, dual walk in closets, French doors, fireplace and master bath.

According to the agent, there was a fire at this property in 1993 which resulted in the new custom four bedroom, 3.5 bath floor plan and complete rebuild in just under 3,000 square feet.?? Now the home is new to the market and is being sold with or without furnishings.

Specifics for this Two Level Traditional:

  • Bedrooms(s): 4
  • Bathroom(s): 3.5
  • Square Ft: 2,956
  • $/Sq. Ft: $457
  • Lot Size: 5,046
  • Property Type: Single Family Home
  • Year Built: 1978. Complete rebuild: 1993
  • HOA Dues: $99 month
  • Central Air
  • Two Car Garage
  • Price Per SqFt: $437
  • Irvine School System
  • No Mello Roos Tax

Who will opt for this property? A family who enjoys backyard space and entertaining will be attracted to the prime hilltop location with its panoramic view. A couple who frequently entertains and often has overnight guests might choose this home.? Other families will be attracted to the very functional floor plan, and outstanding Turtle Rock schools and parks.?

Considerations and Comparisons:? ?All bedrooms are upstairs, which might be a problem for buyers with older family members. Some buyers might be looking for more kitchen upgrades and additional patio accessories for entertaining. ?In comparisons with the other two properties, the wood floors in 11 Bethany excel and the multiple bay windows and French doors score at 18762 Via San Marco. ??But in the final vote, I would choose 10 Windflower with its sublime hilltop views.? That, of course, is a very subjective choice.? As individual buyers pencil out the costs of assets versus final price, they will have to decide what it costs and what really counts for them.? Nearby, 14 Elderberry is pending at $1,050,000 ?with 3 bedrooms and 2.5 baths and canyon views.? And 24 Southern Wood is listed at $1,198,000 with 4 bedrooms and 3 baths and canyon views.

Yankees beat Braves for 10th straight win

NEW YORK (AP) - These AL vs. NL matchups are becoming quite a mismatch for the New York Yankees.

CC Sabathia struck out 10, Derek Jeter drove in three runs and the Yankees won their 10th straight game, beating the Atlanta Braves 6-2 Monday night.

Mark Teixeira and Robinson Cano hit solo home runs as New York equaled its longest winning streak since May 2005.

The team with the AL's best record kept rampaging in interleague play - all 10 of these triumphs have come against NL teams with winning records, including a sweep at Turner Field last week.

"I don't think you're ever satisfied. I think when you become satisfied you can go backwards," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "Guys always feel that they can do more, and that's the bottom line."

"We're finding ways," he said. "We're doing a good job."

Since 1965, the Yankees have had only one winning streak of at least in 11 games, doing that in 1985.

"It hasn't all been blowouts," Sabathia said. "It's coming together for us."

Michael Bourn led off the game with a triple and scored when Martin Prado followed with a groundout, ending Atlanta's 20-inning shutout string. But the Braves' first game at the new Yankee Stadium and first trip to the Bronx since 2006 still resulted in their seventh loss in eight tries.

After the game, it got even worse for the Braves. Manager Fredi Gonzalez revealed that Brandon Beachy, who's leading the majors with a 2.00 ERA, has a partial tear in his right elbow.

Gonzalez did not elaborate on the severity of the injury. He said the 25-year-old Beachy would see the team doctor, then visited noted orthopedist Dr. James Andrews for a second opinion.

As for Atlanta's latest loss, Gonzalez said: "We haven't kept the lineup moving. We haven't battled in at-bats.

Indeed, Sabathia noted that the Braves "were hacking early."

The big lefty gave up seven hits in his 34th career complete game, and first since last July. He walked one, and fanned Chipper Jones and Jason Heyward to finish it.

Sabathia beat the Braves last Tuesday, too, and improved to 22-8 lifetime in interleague play. The workhorse had thrown exactly seven innings in his previous five starts, and topped that. He also became the latest Yankees starter to excel - the group is 12-1 in June, fueling New York's dominant run.

"You don't want to be the guy who messes up," Sabathia said.

Mike Minor (3-5) took a 2-0 lead into the fifth before Alex Rodriguez opened with a sharp single for the Yankees' first hit. Robinson Cano followed with a walk and Russell Martin lined a ground-rule double. Rodriguez scored on the hit, moving him past Mel Ott for 11th place on the career runs list with 1,860.

After another walk and foul out, Jeter came up for a club that has had trouble all season getting hits with runners in scoring position. He worked the count full, then grounded a hard single into center field that gave the Yankees a 3-2 lead and brought his cheering parents to their feet in a private box.

David Ross singled with two outs in the Atlanta sixth and Bourn hit a grounder through the middle. Jeter made a dive, and the shortstop got a forceout at second.

Teixeira hit the Yankees' major league-leading 100th home run in the sixth. Jeter added an RBI single in the seventh off Kris Medlen and Cano hit his 13th homer in the eighth.

Sabathia protected the lead, making it another missed Monday chance for the Braves - they are 0-10 on Mondays this season.

NOTES: Yankees OF Nick Swisher (bruised quad) sat out his second straight game. Girardi expects Swisher will return to the lineup in the next few days. ... Sitting in the right-center field stands, comedian-actor Cedric the Entertainer led the Bleacher Creatures in their "roll call." Recently, New York Giants center David Baas and NBA player Antawn Jamison also took part in the playful player introductions. "It's a little tradition they're starting here, like having someone sing at Wrigley Field in the seventh-inning stretch," said Cedric, a big Cardinals fan. "Jump in there with the crazies, fire everybody up." ... Braves 1B Freddie Freeman (injured finger) missed his fifth straight game.
