Strong earthquake off Guatemala kills at least 48

SAN MARCOS, Guatemala (Reuters) - A strong earthquake off the coast of Guatemala killed at least 48 people and trapped others under rubble on Wednesday, crushing homes and cars, destroying roads and forcing evacuations as far away as Mexico City.

Most of the dead were buried under debris in San Marcos state, a mountainous region near the Mexican border. Landslides triggered by the 7.4-magnitude quake blocked highways and complicated rescue efforts.

It was the strongest earthquake to hit the Central American nation since 1976, when a 7.5-magnitude quake killed more than 20,000 people.

President Otto Perez, who confirmed the death toll after returning to the capital Guatemala City from a lightning trip to San Marcos, said that as many as 23 people were unaccounted for, while 153 people were being housed in emergency shelters.

"It's very sad to meet people here who are waiting to find their families who are still buried," Perez said in San Marcos. "It's really a tragedy and we will do all we can to help the families that are suffering."

Rescue workers in bright yellow helmets worked through the night pulling bodies from the rubble-strewn streets of San Pedro Sacatepequez, San Marcos, as dazed locals looked on, taking stock of the damage.

"Thank God we're alive," said resident Arnulfo Portillo. "To be honest, there's quite a few families who have been hit badly, but we're a tight-knight community and we'll come out on top."

In San Cristobal Cucho, also in San Marcos, all but one of an 11-member family died, buried under rubble, volunteer fireman Ovidio Fuentes told local radio. Only the 17-year-old son survived.

Local Red Cross chief Carlos Enrique Alvarado said 75 homes were destroyed in the city of San Marcos alone and authorities said damage to the prison forced them to transfer 101 inmates to another jail.

Perez, who announced three days of mourning, said Spain and Venezuela had offered help. Authorities distributed 16,000 emergency rations and mobilized more than 2,000 soldiers to help with the rescue effort. The energy ministry said 73,000 people were left without electricity.

In Guatemala City, 100 miles from the quake's epicenter, the streets filled with office workers forced to evacuate buildings, although most soon returned to work.

"It was really big. I felt quite nauseous," said Vanessa Castillo, 32, a secretary who was evacuated from her 10th floor office in the capital.

Building janitor Jorge Gamboa said: "I was in the bathroom. When I came out the office was empty and I thought, what's happening? They didn't even say goodbye."

The epicenter was 26 miles below the surface, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake was felt in El Salvador and more than 760 miles away in Mexico City, where some people also fled offices and homes.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said a small tsunami was registered on Guatemala's coast, although there were no reports that it caused any damage.

Enjoying Being at Home | Large Families on Purpose

So many moms do not enjoy being at home, so then they have their eyes outside their home focused on what they?d rather be doing or think they ?should be able? to be doing or what it looks like other women are able to do.? The family really suffers when this happens because mom?s heart is not in her home; and Hubby may feel like he's failing his wife because she doesn't enjoy the life he's providing for her.? ?

I have felt the Lord moving me to write about this tender topic with the hope of being an encouragement.? So here are 3 book recommendations to teach a mom's heart how to turn her heart towards home; and several practical "how-to's" for making one's home really enjoyable to be in.? And, Sherry Hayes from Large Family Mothering has agreed to write with me answering the same question on her blog ~ because it's one of those Large Family Matters; and because Large Family Matters.? *hugs*??

Many moms feel trapped, or frustrated, angry or depressed, feeling blocked from doing what they think they want to do by children, or financial limitations, or demands on her time...but at the same time her heart is probably sad because she is not the wife and mother she always thought she would be, and she can't figure out why when she loves her children and husband so deeply... That was me about 12 years ago when we had two young children.??

So here are a few resources, and some simple, practical ideas to help bring a mom's heart toward home.

  • Addressing the heart issues - 3 recommended books
  • Offering some practical "how-to's"

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Three Books
A dear friend pointed me toward three books when I was struggling that really showed me - directly through scripture - how to really love being at home and with our children.? And just so you know, I have not mastered these concepts myself yet; but being aware of them and giving me good, holy goals to pursue makes all the difference to me.? I have hope when I have direction and vision.? I think most moms are this way.

This book, among the many other life-changing points that it makes, guides us to an understanding of how we need to intentionally (ON PURPOSE) turn our hearts towards our children and our home.? (I don't mention towards our husbands because I think that's usually an easy one).? We can begin by asking ourselves:

~ What is our mental and emotional focus?? On friends, outside ministries, entertainment, getting more "me time", hobbies, a home business, exercise, etc.?
~ How do we spend discretionary time?? Because where our treasure is, there our heart will be also (Matthew 6:21).

Our time usage proves our priorities.? And how we think effects how we feel, which effects how we act.? And how we act determines whether or not we have our children's hearts, and whether or not we enjoy being with them and being in our homes.

This book is not just for homeschooling moms, but in my opinion is geared toward stay-at-home moms in general. First let's define meek and quiet:

~ Meek:? mild of temper; soft; gentle; not easily provoked or irritated.
~ Quiet:? peaceable; not turbulent; not giving offense; mild; meek; contented.

These seemed so out of reach to me when I first read this book.? *chuckle*? And I still feel like I have a long way to go...but I'm making progress, and have come a long way.

And do you experience these?? Four of the greatest meek and quiet spirit robbers:
  1. Fear and worry
  2. Anger
  3. Depression
  4. Disorganization
Teri Maxwell does such a beautiful job of walking people through how to have freedom from these robbers, and to become more meek and quiet at home.? And she is direct, clear, and full of practical how-to's in the real life throws of life as a mom of eight children.

This book gives ALL the practical how-to's of becoming the manager of one's home; becoming proactive rather than reactive to life, and in creating a wonderful weekly schedule for any type or size of family.? She also backs up all that she teaches with scripture, which I really appreciate and admire.? If you would like to read more about the concept of scheduling you can read my post, Scheduling and Routines:? You Can't Have Your Cake and Eat It, Too, Part 1 of 2, and you could skim the titles of my other "Scheduling and Routines" posts and determine if there are any additional ones that would help you with becoming proactive in your approach to your days.

Some Practical "How-To's"
I also am a great believer in the practical how-to's for one's home.? *smile*? To make it a place that we can love to be.? I honestly love, love our home.? And there's very few other places I would even like to spend my time.? Sometimes my husband, Bob, will offer me the opportunity to just go out for a little while by myself...but I honestly am the most comfortable and the most peaceful in our own home.? Having turned my heart completely towards the Lord and our family (from the outside pursuits I had before), my favorite thing to do now is spend time as a whole family when Bob's home.? I do sometimes also go to our master bedroom when he offers the opportunity to me to just step out of the pressures of parenting for a little while on an evening, but again, I'm not inclined to run to friends or entertainments...I love to be home.? Here are some suggestions to start you thinking on ways to make your home a place you love to be in.

Uncluttered

This...is...huge.? *smile*? De-cluttering a home transforms the place.? When there's stuff filling the walls, behind the doors, underneath furniture, falling out of closets, the home breeds stress for everyone in the family - mom, dad, and children alike.? On the other hand, a home can feel spacious, peaceful and relaxing when it is uncluttered.? Not that our home isn't sometimes covered in toys while kids play, but when play time is over it all goes back to where it belongs; everything has a "home".? And a small house like ours (1100 square feet) can feel spacious even with 11 people in it - honest, cross my heart *smile*.? I have an entire, detailed, with-photos post called, De-Cluttering:? The First Steps To Organization.? Where I cover:? strategies & methods for de-cluttering; where to begin; and how to be careful with others in your family as you develop plans for de-cluttering and organizing your home.

Organized
Again, this...is...huge.? What does orderliness mean exactly, and why is it valuable?? Being orderly saves us time, energy, and money.? And what mom doesn't appreciate that!? *laugh!*? I've written a simple yet detailed post about the value and purpose of organization, called, Orderliness - A Closer Look.? For the practical how-to's part, I've also written two very detailed posts called, Organizing a Home: Principles and Tips For Organization, Parts 1 & 2; and a whole list of other posts on organization if that sounds appealing.? *smile*

Good lighting
This is also huge.? The amount of light in a room really effects how much a person can enjoy being there day in and day out.? It not only makes the room pleasant to be in, but by eliminating shadows and dark corners a room can feel way more spacious than it does when it's dim.??

When we purchased the this, our first home, there were two cheap little ceiling fixtures with two light bulbs inside it in the center of the family room, and the same in the kitchen, in the bedrooms, and every other room.? We immediately began saving money to install recessed lighting in all the main living areas of our home as one of our top priorities.? We purchase one or two can lights at a time (about $25 a piece with a nice trim) as we could afford them and set them aside until we had enough for an entire room.? Then my husband, Bob, transformed the room by installing them.? We did the dining room (removing the bulky, ugly chandelier), the kitchen, hallway, and playroom/computer room.? I am totally convinced that this is one of the main reason why people feel our home looks so spacious despite it's limited square footage.? In fact people always say, "Are you sure your house is only 1100 square feet?"? *chuckle*? Yes.? We're sure.? Here are photos of our family room, dining room, and kitchen with the improved lighting.

And as a side note, we've been using "Daylight" or "Reveal" light bulbs that are color-corrected, giving off a white-white light instead of the usual yellow-ish light of normal light bulbs.? This makes a substantial difference as well.? And now we're actually switching to LED lights which also have that nice white light, but which use a fraction of the amount of electricity, and by the time we have all of our light bulbs switched out they'll save us about $50 per month.? The regular light bulbs use 65 watts, but these LED ones use only 9.5 watts with the same or greater light output! For those with a mind that wants to know, most of the energy in a standard light bulb is wasted as heat not light.? This is 86% less electricity used for the same light output, and the lamps last way longer than the regular ones do.? Regular ones last about 6 months for us at $4 a piece, compared to LED ones which cost $25 a piece but last 10 years.? So over the course of 10 years, this is a $55 savings on the cost of each light bulb alone in addition to the savings on the electric bill. With the amount of time we spend in our home (and being in the Northwest where it is not bright and sunny all year round) we have the lights on about 15 hours per day. If you go shopping for lamps like this be sure to take into consideration how many hours per day you use the lights as the life of the lamp will be different than the suggestion on the box but so will the electricity savings. But lighting is not the only miracle-worker in our home...

Music
Years ago we invested in a good stereo, and I think it was one of our best investments ever. (I had no idea that my husband was a genius back then when he wanted to make an "investment" in a good stereo and not just buy some cheap thing. *chuckle*) We can make our computer's sound go through the surround-sound speakers, making our computer-based movie and documentary experiences really nice despite the small monitor.? And the 5-CD changer I use all day, every day, to play my favorite music during our homeschool mornings.? Music like movie sound tracks, instrumental, hymns, other favorite music artists, and currently Christmas music.? We keep the volume low, but it's a nice background sound that makes us all smile through out the day as we work and come and go.? We sing along and laugh, sometimes acting out our favorite parts of songs.? *chuckle*? And it occupies my brain when I feel like I'm supervising people's school work but am not needed every minute (but can't leave, either.)? Good music really helps keep my eyebrows lifted (rather than scowling at irritations and frustrations), if you know what I mean.? *smile*? And helps me keep a focus on the Lord when days feel hard.? We also listen to audiobooks on the big stereo so that the whole family can hear it easily when we are in the family room or are around the table eating lunch. This isn't really an issue of volume as much as it is clarity and well-balanced sound and good speakers etc.? In addition to good music and stories, I also love...

Fresh air
The way a home smells also makes a big difference on the experience of being there.? The forced-air heating in our house does a nice job of circulating the air through out the rooms, but still with so many people in a small space it can get a little stuffy.? During our summers I love to have the windows open all day long, allowing fresh breezes to pass through all of the house, and in the fall and spring I still try to keep the windows cracked around the house to allow fresh air through.??

Another way I keep the air smelling fresh in our home is to make sure we do not have any laundry lying around the house or in the bedrooms or closets.? For some reason I've yet to figure out, laundry lying around - whether it's clean or not - always makes spaces smell bad.? So laundry in our home (post one, and post two) has a plan for how we stay on top of it.? *smile*? The fresh air alone is a major reason for me to do this!? *laugh*

Another fairly common thing to occur in a home which is packed with way too much stuff, and therefore cannot be dusted and cleaned well, is the presence of Dust Mites.? These are a microscopic bug that feeds on, and defecates in, dust.? *eww*? I know.? Sorry.? I clearly remember my mother teaching me about Dust Mites, and I pretty much vowed then and there that there would be none in my house when I had one.? But I don't think I've ever heard anyone else talk about Dust Mites, and I don't know that most moms are even aware that Dust Mites exist - and that they can be eliminated by de-cluttering, so that we an dust our homes better and avoid the stinkiness of these little darlings.

Scented reed diffuser
A nice-smelling house just makes me smile and love being there!? For years I enjoyed the Yankee candle scents, but since I haven't done candles for years now I didn't have any really nice scents for a long time.? Then I decided to try a Yankee reed diffuser, which I planned to keep in our bedroom where real little kids do not go, and where I was confident that older kids would not drink it.? *chuckle*?? And, here is what I've learned about reed diffusers.? The Yankee reed diffuser I had smelled so nice for about 2 weeks, and then all of a sudden I couldn't smell it any more (and yes, I did flip the bamboo sticks often).? So I tried a Bed Bath and Beyond brand.? Same thing.? I thought maybe those weren't nice enough brands.? So the next opportunity I had to be receiving a gift (our extended family shares gift ideas with one another) I said I would really love a reed diffuser from Pier One Imports (like my mom uses).? I've always really liked Pier One's air freshener sprays, and they're good quality products (and only a couple dollars more than the Wal-Mart brands).? Well I experienced the same thing - nice for 2 weeks, and then nothing.? Huh.? Well with a little research I learned that often times people's noses adjust to a common scent in their home and their nose then just learns to sort of "tune it out".? And I think especially because it was in our bedroom, where we would sleep and smell the scent all night long, my nose was turning off the scents.? Bummer!? I knew it wasn't the reed diffuser itself because our children said it still smelled nice to them, and company said it smelled nice to them, and my mom's reed diffuser smelled great at her house.? But I couldn't smell it in our bedroom unless I stuck my nose right in to the glass jar.? *laugh!*

Well after a while I got tired of having on my dresser an object that needed dusting, and required me to be careful not to knock it over... but which I could not smell.? So I gave it to my sister-in-law.

But the reed diffusers really do smell very nice.? I'll probably try owning one again when I can keep it in a guest bathroom or somewhere less common to my nose then our bedroom, and hope the scent stays around for me.? *smile*? But until then I still think it is a very nice way to scent a home, so I'm recommending them.

Candles
I have always loved the scents and the ambiance of nice candles in a home, too.? When we had only babies then I felt safe having candles around the house.? Then I used to keep a scented Yankee jar candle burning in our bedroom blocked by a baby gate where no kids entered, hoping the scent would make it to the family room.? But now that we've had a large family and many people going in and out of our bedroom all day long I no longer feel safe burning candles.? My husband has worked in the field of disaster restoration - fire and flood repair - for many years, and I've heard enough stories of how fires originated from candles, and have seen enough photos to be cured of the temptation to light candles in our home any more with children present.? *chuckle*? However!? Costco has come up with a solution for people like me!

Costco now sells a few different sets of flameless, vanilla scented LED pillar candles, for only $20-30 per set of 7 candles, made with real wax - and they're beautiful!? *cheer!*? They produce a warm light that flickers within the wax pillar giving the full effect of candles but without the danger of fire.? They are battery operated enabling them to be displayed all in a single location or in various places through out a home.? And, get this, they're remote control.? *laugh*? So they can go on higher up places but still be turned on easily.? You can buy pillar candles all of a uniform height, or in varying heights.? Here's an example of what they look like.

Now I know that the practical "how-to's" like the ones I've shared here can seem way simpler to implement than addressing heart issues of having contentedness, peace, and joy at home.? And the practical strategies are a good place to start!? But the heart issues are the root of the problem, so I encourage you to not skip one for the other.? *hugs*? I really want to reiterate my encouragement to you to invest in one of the books I recommended (listed both above and below).? That is where you will see lasting change and wholeness from the Lord that brings peace.

Blessings on your home,

Fourinone VMultra bundles USB hub, DVD drive, SD slot and 500GB, promises to be ultimate laptop peripheral

While Velocity Micro announced the VMultra earlier this year at CES, it's only now ready for primetime. The VMultra combines a USB hub, an SD card slot, a DVD±RW drive and 500GB of storage into a surprisingly slim package that connects to any computer via USB 3.0. If you like, you can even fit your own 2.5-inch hard drive in the SATA III bay. You'll have to take out the included 500GB HDD first of course. The company intends this to be a "perfect all-in-one peripheral," especially for notebook travelers looking to lighten their luggage; perhaps to make room for things like "clothes." Each VMultra will cost you $199.99 and will ship starting November 12th.

For those who prefer desktops, Velocity Micro also announced a $599 holiday edition of its Vector PC that runs on a dual-core AMD A6-5400k processor and 8GB of DDR3 RAM in the same press release, which you can peek at after the break.

When You Buy a Hearing Aid, Look for Free Services That Come ...

There are many businesses that offer free services to customers who purchase a hearing aid. You should locate one if you wish to save money, especially if you need to buy this device out of pocket without help from insurance. Consider some of the services you might be able to get for free if you are losing your ability to hear.

You will first need a test to find out whether you actually need a hearing aid, or possibly two of these devices. Fortunately, the test is usually rather quick and noninvasive, so you can expect many local businesses to offer it for free. This is one way they not only help you out and get a good reputation for it, but they may also get a new customer if it turns out there is an issue with your ears. This is why many offices offer this service without charging, since it is mutually beneficial, meaning it is not too good to be true.

Once you select a hearing aid from the shop, you will likely be offered cleaning without charge for the life of the device. You should get it cleaned regularly, and though you may be able to do a good job of it yourself, it makes sense to let the professionals do it instead to make sure to get an impressive result. You may not have the right cleaning products or patience for the job, so you are advised to try to find an office that will clean it without charging you, any time you want it cleaned.

Finally, over the life of the hearing aid you buy, you will find you need to adjust it. This is because the ears tend to grow and change shape with age, so you will need some updates in how the device fits if you want maximum comfort and ability to hear. This is why it is wise to find a shop that will adjust the item for free at any time. Otherwise, you may end up paying a lot for adjustments over the lifetime of the device. The costs can really add up, leading you to procrastinate or simply not get it done when you do not have the money, so having this as a free service is a good idea.

The good news is that many reputable businesses that are willing to sell you a hearing aid are also happy to offer some services at no cost. You should look for these types of shops if you want to save money over time. You can just call around if you are not sure which businesses offer type kind of help without charging.

If you need a reliable source for a Houston, TX hearing aid company, give us a call. At http://www.miracle-ear-houston.com, we make helping the customer our first priority.

Study reveals declining influence of high impact factor journals

Wednesday, November 7, 2012

The most prestigious peer-reviewed journals in the world, such as Cell, Nature, Science, and the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), have less and less influence amongst scientists, according to a paper co-authored by Vincent Larivi?re, a professor at the University of Montreal's School of Library and Information Sciences. He questions the relationship between journal "impact factor" and number of citations subsequently received by papers. "In 1990, 45% of the top 5% most cited articles were published in the top 5% highest impact factor journals. In 2009, this rate was only 36%," Larivi?re said. "This means that the most cited articles are published less exclusively in high impact factor journals." The proportion of these articles published in major scholarly journals has sharply declined over the last twenty years. His study was based on a sample of more than 820 million citations and 25 million articles published between 1902 and 2009. The findings were published in the Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology.

For each year analysed in the study, Larivi?re evaluated the strength of the relationship between article citations in the two years following publication against the journal impact factor. Then, he compared the proportion of the most cited articles published in the highest impact factor journals. "Using various measures, the goal was to see whether the 'predictive' power of impact factor on citations received by articles has changed over the years," Larivi?re said. "From 1902 to 1990, major findings were reported in the most prominent journals," notes Larivi?re. But this relationship is less true today."

Larivi?re and his colleagues George Lozano and Yves Gingras of UQAM's Observatoire des sciences et des technologies also found that the decline in high impact factor journals began in the early 90s, when the Internet experienced rapid growth within the scientific community. "Digital technology has changed the way researchers are informed about scientific texts. Historically, we all subscribed to paper journals. Periodicals were the main source for articles, and we didn't have to look outside the major journals," Larivi?re noted. "Since the advent of Google Scholar, for example, the process of searching information has completely changed. Search engines provide access to all articles, whether or not they are published in prestigious journals."

Impact factor as a measure of a journal's influence was developed in the 1960s by Eugene Garfield, one of the founders of bibliometrics. "It is basically the average number of times a journal's articles are cited over a two-year period," Larivi?re explained. "Initially, this indicator was used to help libraries decide which journals to subscribe to. But over time, it began to be used to evaluate researchers and determine the value of their publications." The importance of impact factor is so ingrained in academia's collective consciousness that researchers themselves use impact factor to decide which journals they will submit their articles to.

Various experts in bibliometrics have criticized the use of impact factor as a measure of an academic journal's visibility. A common criticism is that the indicator contains a calculation error. "Citations from all types of documents published by journal are counted," Larivi?re said, "but they are divided only by the number of articles and research notes. Impact factor is thus overestimated for journals that publish a good deal of editorials, letters to the editor, and science news, such as Science and Nature."

Another criticism is that the time frame in which citations are counted in calculating impact factor is too short. "There are research areas in which knowledge dissemination is faster than it is in others," Larivi?re said. "We cannot, for example, expect to get the same kind of impact factor in engineering and biomedical sciences." Yet journal impact factor is established in the two-year period following publication of articles regardless of the discipline.

The research results reveal some interesting points. On the one hand, journals are increasingly poor predictors of the number of citations an article can expect to receive. "Not only has the predictive power of impact factor declined, but also, impact factor is no longer suitable for evaluating research," Larivi?re argued. In his opinion, if we want to evaluate researchers and their work, it is best to use citations, which are a true measure of an article's impact. "This indicator is more accurate. It is not an estimation based on the hierarchy of journals." On the other hand, his work confirms that the dynamics of scholarly journals is changing, due especially to the open access of knowledge made possible by the Internet. "What then is the present function of scholarly journals?" Larivi?re asked. "One remains: peer review."

Autism Treatment, Best Time To Start?

Among the many questions parents and healthcare providers ponder about autism spectrum disorders(ASD) is when to start treatment. Now a small but important study provides an answer to that question, and names a specific type of autism treatment as well.

Parents of children with ASD face a multitude of challenges as they navigate the complex avenues of the condition, always in search of effective treatments and answers to their many questions. But as the Autism Society explains that "just as there is no one symptom or behavior that identifies individuals with ASD, there is no single treatment that will be effective for all people on the spectrum."

At Yale Child Study Center, a research team has offered some new information. Their study results indicate that a behavioral program called Pivotal Response Treatment could yield good results when started in children as young as less than two years of age. Typically, autism treatment programs have been geared for children around three year or older.

Pivotal Response Treatment (PRT) was developed by Dr. Robert L. Koegel and Dr. Lynn Kern Koegel and, according to the official PRT website, is "one of the few [autism treatments] that is both comprehensive...and empirically supported."

Briefly, PRT focuses on pivotal areas of a child's development, including self-management, response to multiple cues, motivation, and social initiations. The PRT site notes that when these areas are targeted, it "results in widespread, collateral improvements in communication, social, and behavioral domains."

Pivotal Response Treatment stresses parental involvement and educates families so they can integrate the treatment in daily routines. The approach has been shown to lead 85 to 90 percent of children with autism to develop verbal skills as "a primary mode of communication."

In this latest study, researchers were the first to use functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to examine changes in brain activity after two five-year-olds with ASD had received PRT. The children demonstrated improvement in speaking with other people and in their behavior, and the fMRIs also showed increased activity in areas associated with social perception.

Previous research
Admittedly this is a small study, but the team has already launched a larger study that includes 60 children. In addition, previous research has indicated PRT can be beneficial for very young children.

For example, results of a pilot study published in the May 2012 issue of the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders explained use of PRT in three infants at risk for autism. The authors noted that use of PRT "resulted in increases in the infants' frequency of functional communication," and that their findings "provide preliminary support for the feasibility and utility of PRT for very young children at-risk for autism."

An earlier study from Stanford University School of Medicine reported on the ability of parents to learn PRT in group therapy and how use of treatment affected their children. The authors noted their findings "suggest that parents can learn PRT in a group format, resulting in correlated child language gains."

Based on the results of the latest two case studies, one of the study's authors, Dr. Fred Volkmar, noted that "these findings are exciting because they show that early intervention works in autism." For parents who have a child with ASD, they offer more information about when and how it's best to start treatment for autism.

GLASS HAMMER Perelandra music review by Aussie-Byrd-Brother

3 stars Still a bit of a way from true greatness, `Perelandra' sees US symphonic proggers Glass Hammer again looking towards classic fantasy literature for musical inspiration, this time around it's C.S.Lewis and `The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe' books. At least this album, unlike their fairly average debut album `Journey Of The Dunadan', sees main members Steve Babb and Fred Schendel taking a big step forward in terms of better and more memorable arrangements, much higher quality control that ditches the narration and a far fuller production that highlights the talent of all the musicians. It's very satisfying to hear the band blending and gelling together better, with most of the material allowing the individual members to compliment each other throughout the various flashy displays and solo contributions. Some of it shows a refreshing sense of humour and lightness that greatly benefits their over the top music as well!

After a short sound-effects introduction that sounds like an outtake from Pink Floyd's `The Wall', the ten minute `Time Marches On' has a grand symphonic intro soon joined by the whole band on wonderful group harmonies. Fred is given a serious keyboard variety workout throughout the piece with endless synth solos, and Steve's bass is starting to get that classic epic prog upfront sound. There's a number of uplifting `Yes' like themes and classic 70's majestic prog ideas worked into the piece. Another long one, `Illusion' has lovely galloping bass, tight snappy drumming and furious E.L.P styled organ/keyboard attacks. Fred's vocals - always a little bland, but still full of character and one of the constant Glass Hammer elements fans love - are a little strained but certainly very heartfelt, just like on the reworked `The Way To Her Heart', a lovely Christian ballad from the debut album.

`Felix The Cat' is a quirky but brief 70's Rick Wakeman-styled classical workout - very catchy and cute! The instrumental title track has a darkly dramatic piano introduction backed with hypnotic programmed percussion, before a prancing and upbeat synth melody and grumbling bass kick in. The whole piece alternates between reflective moodiness and uplifting qualities, and it's a standout track on the album with endless keyboard playfulness and energetic bass.

The album suddenly enters an oddly gloomy and depressing stretch here! Singer Walter Moore, showing up on the next few tracks, gives a somber and effective vocal on the surprisingly gothic and serious `La Danse Finale', with striking and dark saxophone heightening the lonely atmosphere. `That Hideous Strength' is very strange! Heavy electronic middle-eastern themes, 80's metal synths and even strangely rapping vocals amongst swirling feedback distorted electric guitars - and there's a wonderful Steve Rothery-styled emotional solo to seal the deal too. We then have a short role-playing acted piece that is much more successful than the similar attempts on the debut album.

The stunning and restrained `Into The Night' has dreamy Pink Floyd `Dark Side-era' and early Porcupine Tree droning group vocals with drifting and moving slide guitar. It really shows how effective the band can be when they tone down the over-the-top prog workouts for a few minutes, and it's easily one of the best pieces Glass Hammer recorded on their early run of albums.

The album ends with a typical rich and symphonic longer Glass Hammer piece `Heaven', another subtle Christian piece full of majestic medieval romantic musical themes and wistful vocals handled by both Walter and Fred. There's the odd clunky lyric, but it's very genuine and positive with a lovely melody. Nice booming church organ and rumbling bass runs throughout female gospel vocals too make it a suitably grand and epic finale to a very decent album.

Out of the few Glass Hammer albums they made before their first classic `Lex Rex', this is the one to get - great production, lots of virtuoso musical variety and consistently strong vocals with pleasant melodies. It's more fully realized, mature and sophisticated than the debut, so if you're looking to delve into the history of the band before they really started making their mark, you can't go wrong with `Perelandra' - the first Glass Hammer sign of greatness.

Three and a half stars!

Instagram profiles are coming to the Web | MyFOX8.com - WGHP-TV 8

(CNN) ? Photo-sharing app Instagram has attracted more than 100 million users by encouraging people to snap pictures with their smartphones, dress them up with filters and share them with friends.

In the two years since Instagram launched, it?s been a mobile-only network for an increasingly mobile society.

Now that?s about to change. Instagram announced Monday it will be adapting user photos and data into Web-based profiles for people to enjoy from laptops or desktops. Each Web profile will feature a selection of recently shared photographs along with the user?s profile photo and bio, offering a quick visual snapshot of someone?s interests and aesthetic.

?We?re launching Web profiles to give you a simple way to share your photos with more people and to make it easier to discover new users on the Web,? Instagram said in a blog post.

Photos are expandable on the new Web pages, meaning your followers will be able to view your prized pics in a larger, 6?6-inch format instead of peering at those little square images on their phones.

?It strikes me that a quick, dynamic overview of your life in pictures is maybe even more compelling than the overall Facebook Timeline because it?s so simple. Everyone understands pictures,? wrote tech columnist and prolific Instagram user MG Siegler on his blog.

Users won?t be able to upload images to their accounts from the Web, although they can follow others, comment and like photos. It?s a big upgrade over Instagram?s traditionally bare-bones website, which has contained little more than a blog and information for app developers.

The new interface creates a challenge for the ecosystem of independent sites that had sought to fill Instagram?s Web void by offering browser-based platforms for viewing, liking and commenting on photos from the app.

They include Statigram, which gives users a detailed breakdown of data concerning their Instagram feed, and Webstagram, a more straightforward photo viewing site.

Instagram says its Web profiles will launch for all users in the next week or so. ?If you can?t see your profile yet, rest assured that you?ll see it in the next few days,? the company says.

Instagram also says that if your photos are set to private, they will be visible on the Web only to Instagram users you?ve allowed to follow you.

To see your profile or to explore a friend?s profile, go to Instagram.com/[username].

(AP) ? The White House the prize, President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney raced through a final full day of campaigning on Monday through Ohio and other battleground states holding the keys to victory in a tight race. Both promised brighter days ahead for a nation still struggling with a sluggish economy and high joblessness.

"Our work is not done yet," Obama told a cheering crowd of nearly 20,000 in chilly Madison, Wis., imploring his audience to give him another four years.

Romney projected optimism as he neared the end of his six-year quest for the presidency. "If you believe we can do better. If you believe America should be on a better course. If you're tired of being tired ... then I ask you to vote for real change," he said in a Virginia suburb of the nation's capital. With many of the late polls in key states tilting slightly against him, he decided to campaign on Election Day in Ohio and Pennsylvania, where he and Republicans made a big, late push.

The presidency aside, there are 33 Senate seats on the ballot Tuesday, and according to one Republican official, a growing sense of resignation among his party's rank and file that Democrats will hold their majority.

The situation was reversed in the House, where Democrats made no claims they were on the verge of victory in pursuit of the 25 seats they need to gain control.

National opinion polls in the presidential race made the popular vote a virtual tie.

In state-by-state surveys, it appeared Obama held small advantages in Nevada, Ohio, Iowa and Wisconsin ? enough to deliver a second term if they endured, but not so significant that they could withstand an Election Day surge by Romney supporters. Both men appealed to an ever smaller universe of undecided voters.

More than 30 million absentee or early ballots have been cast, including in excess of 3 million in Florida. The state also had a legal controversy, in the form of a Democratic lawsuit seeking an extension of time for pre-Election Day voting.

There were other concerns, logistical rather than legal.

Officials in one part of New Jersey delivered voting equipment to emergency shelters so voters displaced by Superstorm Sandy last week could cast ballots. New York City made arrangements for shuttle buses to provide transportation for some in hard-hit areas unable to reach their polling places.

Judging from the long early voting lines in some places and the comments made in others, the voters were more than ready to have their say.

"I watch the news all the time, and I am ready for it to be over," said Jennifer Walker, 38, of Columbus, Ohio, who said she took time off from work to attend the president's speech during the day in a show of support. "I feel like he is getting better with the economy. I don't think it's hopeless. It takes time."

But Bryan Dobes, 21, a University of Iowa student from suburban Chicago, voted for Romney on Monday and said unemployment and spending have been too high under Obama. "He promised a lot of hope and change, and I'm not seeing it," he said of the president.

"No retreat, no surrender," sang rock icon Bruce Springsteen, warming up Obama's crowd on a frosty morning outside the State Capitol in Madison, Wis. The Boss then boarded Air Force One for his first flight. "Pretty cool," he judged it.

Romney had Kid Rock and the Marshall Tucker Band in the wings for his late appearances in Ohio and New Hampshire.

"This is it," the challenger said in a last-minute emailed request for campaign donations.

"I will lead us out of this economic crisis by implementing pro-growth policies that will create 12 million new jobs. With your help, I will deliver real change and a real recovery. America will be strong again."

In his longest campaign day, Romney raced from Florida to a pair of speeches in Virginia to Ohio and then an election eve rally in New Hampshire.

Obama selected Wisconsin, Ohio and Iowa for his final campaign day, an itinerary that reflected his campaign's decision to try and erect a Midwestern firewall against Romney's challenge.

Vice President Joe Biden and Republican running mate Paul Ryan of Wisconsin went through their final campaign paces, as well.

In Sterling, Va., not far from Washington, the vice president accused Republicans of running away from their record, but added, "a leopard can't change his spots."

Ryan started out in Reno, Nev., where he said the president has come up short in his promises to change Washington and repair the economy.

"This may be the best that Barack Obama can offer, but this is not the best America can," he said, before flying off to Colorado and Ohio. Then it was home to Wisconsin, where he is on the ballot for re-election to Congress in case Republicans were unsuccessful in the presidential campaign.

Conscientious to the end, supporters kept knocking on doors in search of a possibly decisive vote.

In Enfield, N.H., Obama volunteer Sarah Ayres recalled driving up a deserted dirt road, unsure if she would find the house she was looking for. She turned down a long driveway, she said, got out of her car, and was met by a friendly, white goat.

"There were no people home, but the goat was there, so I don't know if I should count that as a contact," she joked.
