Tue, 15 Jan 2013 17:15:53 -0800 Sinhala military opens ?holiday resorts? in occupied Jaffna with ?Kiribath Pongkal? http://igyriip.posterous.com/sinhala-military-opens-holiday-resorts-in-occ http://igyriip.posterous.com/sinhala-military-opens-holiday-resorts-in-occ

Amidst the beat of Sinhala drums and blessings of Sinhala-Buddhist monks, the SL military occupying Jaffna opened two new ?holiday resorts? on Sunday at Mayiliddi, and at Kaankeasan-thu?rai (KKS), which are under High Security Zone, along the northern coast of Jaffna. To mark the opening, an SL Military ?Kiribath Pongkal? was also conducted at the new buildings. While the housing and even shelters of the hundreds of thousands of Eezham Tamils affected by the genocidal onslaught of the Sinhala military is still a pressing question, the military opening and running ?holiday resorts? for its use shows that Sri Lanka is not making any pretensions of its colonial conquest and rule over Eezham Tamils in the model of European colonialists, civil society sources in Jaffna commented.

Tue, 15 Jan 2013 01:25:57 -0800 CHRISTMAS MORNING SUNSET (& UPDATE) ? Orange County ... http://igyriip.posterous.com/christmas-morning-sunset-update-orange-county http://igyriip.posterous.com/christmas-morning-sunset-update-orange-county

Hello there, and welcome to 2013 on my blog!

I always take some time off over December to immerse myself in the kids and the traditions of Christmas?.it has been so nice. Over that time, we re-c0nnected with old friends and family, had a lot of rest, took the boys camping, celebrated two birthdays, organized a trip to Disneyland for Mckenna, organized a weekend with cousins for Anna, had everyone at our house for Christmas Eve, and hosted a NYE party turned hilarious tipsy dance party. I was also able to photograph newborn twins on New Years Day, and meet up for a last minute session with a repeat client at the beach. We ALSO cleaned out and re-organized our home office, which was a huge major undertaking.

WHEW!

I spoke here about wanting to make Christmas something ?. more ?. and less ?.. this season. With older kids, we wanted to make something magic out of our time together that didn?t have as much to do with Jolly Ole Saint Nick and the presents he brings. We still wanted to offer them gifts, but we wanted to limit the amount and gift with some meaning and thoughtfulness. It became a puzzle/challenge for us to think of things that were simple, yet would be fun or surprising for them to open. We did a name swap with my family to save money and limit stress for everyone. I wanted to focus on giving with the kids, and we came up with something we could give everyone: homemade succulent planters. I had a plethora of second hand containers and soil, all it took was a trip to Home Depot for a flat of baby plants and some time with the kids choosing which succulents would go to whom, and in what container. They loved creating them and giving them, as did I. I am pretty sure everyone liked receiving them, too.

Another thing that was important for me to address was Christmas day itself ? it was going to be the first time in years we would stay home all day, just us, and I wanted to make sure it was special. Jeff and I talked many times about many different ideas. But the one that stuck is pictured above.

These photos are from Christmas morning. We woke them up for a change, while it was still dark outside, at 5:45am. Jeff whispered, ?Get dressed in warm clothes, and head quietly downstairs, we have a surprise for you.? As they got ready, I made hot chocolate and coffee in paper to-go cups. We piled into our cold car, listening to Christmas music as we drove. The streets were empty. It was dark. We drove to one of our favorite spots and walked up to the top of a hill that has 365 degree views of Orange County. You can see ocean, mountains, and everything in between. I handed out our warm drinks, laid out a blanket, and we watched the Christmas morning sunrise.

It was really, really special. I was overcome with emotion and joy in a way I haven?t been in a long time. I knew it was right, that it was needed, that they would get it. I had never woken up for a sunrise before in my life, and neither had the kids. We cuddled, drank our coffee and hot cocoa, took photos, and then when the sun had peeked above the mountains and the morning was all lit up, we drove home to see what Santa had left us.

I am enthusiastically looking forward into 2013, which professionally will (finally) bring the change to my brand, new blog formats and features, more travel sessions, and a new collaboration I am really thrilled and excited to be a part of. (It starts tomorrow! Come back in the morning for details.)

Personally, I hope 2013 will include more time with my favorite people, more learning and personal growth, more time outside, and duh ? obvi: more good thrift karma.

?Tara

Mon, 14 Jan 2013 20:07:21 -0800 India Trip to Examine Issues in Child Survival: How Science and Engineering Help http://igyriip.posterous.com/india-trip-to-examine-issues-in-child-surviva http://igyriip.posterous.com/india-trip-to-examine-issues-in-child-surviva

Back in October, I opened my email to find an interesting invitation for me to apply for a trip to India as part of a special International Reporting Project bloggers? trip focusing on child survival and related issues of health and development.

The trip described in full

?The trip will focus on issues of child survival in India. Among the topics we will examine are the development of vaccines, child malnutrition, tuberculosis, polio, HIV/AIDS, maternal health, access to clean water and hygiene, privatization of health care and its affect on child survival, and the impact of agricultural and rural development on child survival. The program will include meetings and site visits in Delhi and Mumbai, with a visit to a rural area. Participants would be asked to be as active as possible in blogging or reporting in any format about the trip. We would encourage blogging during the trip, and afterwards. Multimedia content is encouraged.?

And I thought, ?How could I turn down the opportunity to have an all expenses paid trip to India and have the opportunity to share this experience with everyone in my online audience??

I?m not a journalist at all. I consider myself an educator and an ?accidental? new media and social media expert. I expect then it is my presence online that captured the attention of the International Reporting Project that sees the face of reporting and journalism changing, and recognizes that people like me, ones who are enthusiastic about sharing their favored topics with the world, have a valid voice and a role to play in disseminating information.

I am invited to go on expense paid trips with an increasing frequency as my online presence grows stronger, in order to share the topic of the trip with my online audience through social media, my website, Joanne Loves Science and at Scientific American. I?ve had some fantastic opportunities to share new and interesting science and technology. I love to learn and experience new things in the realm of science and engineering. These trips provide me these opportunities and more excitingly is that I can share them with anyone who will listen!

I pitched the angle that I would like to examine India?s children?s health issues from the standpoint of how science and engineering are working on these challenges. I plan to meet and interview scientists and engineers to hear their stories and understand what motivates them to tackle these issues. I hope my time there will give a glimpse of the great need for science and engineering to step in and help ameliorate these serious health issues and perhaps even motivate some young people to consider a STEM career as a way of applying their talent to solve healthcare challenges. In addition, as a mother of four children, and the child advocate I am in general, I expect my heart to be touched by the struggles these children face daily.

I have been accepted to go on this trip and will be sharing with all of you with as much frequency as possible what I learn about children?s health issues and how science and engineering are making great strides in these areas. (Speaking of which, yesterday was the two year anniversary of India being polio-free!)

Here is the official press release:

?The International Reporting Project (IRP) has selected ten innovative journalists and new media experts from around the world to participate in a ten-day trip to India on February 17-27, 2013.

The new media journalists will meet with a wide range of Indians and explore issues of child survival in India. Among the topics we will examine are the development of vaccines, child malnutrition, tuberculosis, polio, HIV/AIDS, maternal health, access to clean water and hygiene, privatization of health care and its affect on child survival, and the impact of agricultural and rural development on child survival.

?This trip represents IRP?s renewed focus on using innovative tools to report on critical, under-covered international issues,? said John Schidlovsky, director of the Washington-based IRP.

The new media journalists, their affiliation and their countries of origin are:
? Hagit Bachrach, CFR.org ? Israel?
? Joy Doreen Biira, KTN Kenya ? Uganda?
? Jose Miguel Calatayud, freelance ? Spain?
? Jennifer Uloma Igwe, Nigeria TV Authority ? Nigeria
?? Mark Kaigwa, Afrinnovator.com ? Kenya?
? Leon Kaye, freelance ? United States
?? Joanne Manaster, freelance ? United States?
? Lindsey Mastis, Feature Story News ? United States?
? Tando Ntunja, freelance ? South Africa?
? Roshanak Taghavi, freelance ? United States

Follow them on our Twitter list to receive updates during the trip.?

I?d like to thank the IRP for somehow finding me on their radar and inviting me for this exciting project.

I also extend thanks to the School of Integrative Biology at UIUC for their incredible support of the outreach I do for science.

GoPro cameras are outfitting me with a new Hero3 to help me document this trip. Thank you, GoPro!

Sat, 12 Jan 2013 02:41:26 -0800 Oscar Nominations 2013: Sundance-Endorsed Films Nab 13 Nods ... http://igyriip.posterous.com/oscar-nominations-2013-sundance-endorsed-film http://igyriip.posterous.com/oscar-nominations-2013-sundance-endorsed-film

The Oscar nominations are in, and although some members of Hollywood are feeling the biting chill of the Academy's cold shoulder (cough, Ben Affleck and Kathryn Bigelow, cough), there are certainly more than a few institutions who have cause to celebrate. One among them -- the Sundance Film Festival.

The morning's announcement's included 13 nods for Sundance-endorsed films, including last year's bayou-inspired drama, "Beasts of the Southern Wild." The movie, which premiered at the Utah-based festival in 2012, received four nominations in total including Best Picture, Best Director (Benh Zeitlin), Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Actress in a Leading Role (Quvenzhan? Wallis).

The Sundance emblem was most visible in the Best Documentary Feature category, however. "How to Survive a Plague," a powerful portrait of AIDS activists coalescing to fight for their lives, and "The Invisible Men," a story of two gay Palestinians seeking refuge in Tel Aviv, are both award contenders with roots in Sundance's 2012 Documentary Film Program. Two other documentaries, "5 Broken Cameras" and "Searching for Sugar Man" hit the circuit in 2012, while the final selection, "The Gatekeepers," will run at the festival this year.

Other Sundance-supported nominations include "No" for Best Foreign Language Film, "Open Heart" for Best Documentary -- Short, "Chasing Ice" for Best Original Song ("Before My Time"), and "The Sessions" for Best Actress in a Supportive Role (Helen Hunt).

(AP) ? The National Rifle Association on Sunday forcefully stuck to its call for placing armed police officers and security guards in every school as the best way to avoid shootings such as the recent massacre at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn.

Wayne LaPierre, CEO of the nation's largest gun rights lobbying organization, said the NRA would push Congress to put a police officer in every school and would coordinate a national effort to put former military and police offers in schools as volunteer guards.

The NRA's response to the Newtown shooting has been panned on several fronts since the group broke its weeklong silence on Friday about the rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Rep. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., called it "the most revolting, tone deaf statement I've ever seen." A headline from the New York Post summarized LaPierre's initial presentation before reporters in Washington with the headline: "Gun Nut! NRA loon in bizarre rant over Newtown."

"If it's crazy to call for putting police and armed security in our schools to protect our children, then call me crazy," LaPierre told NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday. "I think the American people think it's crazy not to do it. It's the one thing that would keep people safe."

LaPierre also contended that any new efforts by Congress to regulate guns or ammunition would not prevent mass shootings. His fresh comments reinforced the position that the NRA took on Friday.

Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., said LaPierre appears to blame everything but guns for a series of mass shootings in recent years.

"Trying to prevent shootings in schools without talking about guns is like trying to prevent lung cancer without talking about cigarettes," Schumer said.

The NRA plans to develop an emergency response program that would include using volunteers from the group's 4.3 million members to help guard children, and has named former Rep. Asa Hutchinson, R-Ark., as national director of the school program.

Hutchinson said the NRA's position was a "very reasonable approach" that he compared to the federal air marshal program that places armed guards on flights.

"Are our children less important to protect than our air transportation? I don't think so," said Hutchinson, who served as an undersecretary at the Department of Homeland Security when it was formed.

Hutchinson said schools should not be required to use armed security. LaPierre also argued that local law enforcement should have final say on how the security is put into place, such as where officers would be stationed.

"I've made it clear that it should not be a mandatory law, that every school has this. There should be local choice, but absolutely, I believe that protecting our children with an armed guard who is trained is an important part of the equation," Hutchinson told ABC's "This Week."

LaPierre cited Israel as a model for the type of school security system the NRA envisions.

""Israel had a whole lot of school shootings until they did one thing: They said 'we're going to stop it,' and they put armed security in every school and they have not had a problem since then," he said.

Democratic lawmakers in Congress have become more adamant about the need for stricter gun laws since the shooting. Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California is promising to push for a renewal of legislation that banned certain weapons and limited the number of bullets a gun magazine could hold to 10. NRA officials made clear the legislation is a non-starter for them.

"It hasn't worked," LaPierre said. "Dianne Feinstein had her ban and Columbine occurred."

There also has been little indication from Republican leaders that they'll go along with any efforts to curb what kind of guns can be purchased or how much ammunition gun magazines can hold. Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., noted that he had an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle in his home. He said America would not be made safer by preventing him from buying another one. As to gun magazine limits, he said he can quickly reload by putting in a new magazine.

"The best way to interrupt a shooter is to keep them out of the school, and if they get into the school, have somebody who can interrupt them through armed force," Graham said.

Schumer said that he believes gun owners have even been taken aback by LaPierre's refusal to include additional gun regulation as part of an overall response to the Newtown massacre.

"He's turning people off. That's not where America is at and he's actually helping us," Schumer said on NBC, where he appeared with Graham.

LaPierre also addressed other factors that he said contribute to gun violence in America, but he would not concede that the types of weapons being used are part of the problem.

He was particularly critical of states, which he said are not placing the names of people into a national database designed to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and the dangerously mentally ill. He said some states are not entering names into the system and 23 others are only putting in a small number of records.

"So when they go through the national instant-check system, and they go to try to screen out one of those lunatics, the records are not even in the system," LaPierre said.

Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut said he found the NRA's statements in recent days disheartening because they deal with every possible cause of gun violence, except guns. He said the NRA's position means that any new regulations that the administration wants to put into place early next year "is not going to happen easily."

"It's going to be a battle, but the president, I think, and vice president, are really ready to lead the fight," Lieberman said on CNN's "State of the Union."

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - President Bashar al-Assad's military has fired more Scud-type missiles inside Syria, NATO officials said on Friday, more than a week after the Western alliance first detected such arms being used on rebel targets.

"I can confirm that we have detected the launch of Scud-type missiles. We strongly regret that act," NATO chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen said, calling the launches "acts of a desperate regime approaching collapse".

A NATO source said there had been multiple launches of Scud-type missiles inside Syria on Thursday morning.

Rasmussen used the Scud launches to justify NATO's decision to dispatch Patriot anti-missile systems to NATO ally Turkey - a deployment criticized by Syria, Iran and Russia.

"The fact that such missiles are used in Syria emphasizes the need for effective defense protection of our ally Turkey," he told reporters after talks at NATO headquarters with Djibouti Prime Minister Dileita Mohamed Dileita.

"The recent launch of missiles has not hit Turkish territory but of course there is a potential threat and this is exactly the reason why NATO allies decided to deploy Patriot missiles in Turkey, for a defensive purpose only," he said.

Thu, 20 Dec 2012 17:21:22 -0800 Paper waste used to make bricks http://igyriip.posterous.com/paper-waste-used-to-make-bricks http://igyriip.posterous.com/paper-waste-used-to-make-bricks

Dec. 19, 2012 ? Researchers at the University of Jaen (Spain) have mixed waste from the paper industry with ceramic material used in the construction industry. The result is a brick that has low thermal conductivity meaning it acts as a good insulator. However, its mechanical resistance still requires improvement.

"The use of paper industry waste could bring about economic and environmental benefits as it means that material considered as waste can be reused as raw material." -- This is one of the conclusions of the study developed by researchers at the Upper Polytechnic School of Linares (University of Jaen), which has been published in the? journal Fuel Processing Technology.

The scientists collected cellulous waste from a paper factory (recycled waste in this case) along with sludge from the purification of its waste water. In their laboratory they then mixed this material with clay used in construction and passed the mixture through a pressure and extrusion machine to obtain bricks.

"Adding waste means that the end product has low thermal conductivity and is therefore a good insulator," explains Carmen Mart?nez, researcher at the University of Jaen. "In addition to the resulting benefit of using these bricks instead of their traditional counterparts made of traditional raw materials."

Another of the advantages of adding waste to the brick prototypes is that they provide energy due to their organic material content. This could help to reduce fuel consumption and kiln time required for brick production.

At the moment the prototype's dimensions are small (3 x 1 x 6 cm). But the team has already tested larger bricks and the results are similar. "On the whole, this technique could bring about a saving in energy and raw materials for brick factories along with environmental benefits from the use of waste that is initially discarded," adds Mart?nez.

The researcher recognises, however, that the 'Achilles heel' of these bricks is their lower mechanical resistance compared to traditional bricks, although this parameter is above the legal minimum. There are still a few problems to solve in the adherence and shaping of those pieces that have high percentages of paper waste.

The team continues in their search for the happy medium between sustainability and material resistance and is still researching the advantages of adding other products, such as sludge from water treatment plants or residues from the beer, olive and biodiesel industries.

Fuel Processing Technology has published another study confirming that biodiesel waste can be used for brick manufacture, thus increasing insulation capacity by 40%.

Wed, 19 Dec 2012 04:14:51 -0800 Newtown backlash prompts gun investment overhaul http://igyriip.posterous.com/newtown-backlash-prompts-gun-investment-overh http://igyriip.posterous.com/newtown-backlash-prompts-gun-investment-overh

(Reuters) - Gun makers are facing pressure from some major U.S. investors after the Newtown elementary school shooting, with private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management LP announcing it would sell the largest U.S. manufacturer of firearms and major public pension funds reviewing their gun-related investments.

Cerberus said on Tuesday it would sell Freedom Group, whose AR-15-type Bushmaster rifle was used by a 20-year-old gunman to kill 20 children and six staff in Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.

Cerberus' move came after some of its investors had expressed concerns, including the California State Teachers' Retirement System (CalSTRS), which said on Monday that it was reviewing its investment with the private equity firm.

"It is apparent that the Sandy Hook tragedy was a watershed event that has raised the national debate on gun control to an unprecedented level," said Cerberus, which has more than $20 billion under management.

The $150.1 billion New York State Common Retirement Fund is reviewing its investments in firearm manufacturers, a spokesman for New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli said on Tuesday.

New York City's pension funds are also reviewing investments and may sell nearly $18 million worth of stock in four companies that manufacture guns and ammunition, a spokesman said on Tuesday. The city's mayor, Michael Bloomberg, has been a leading advocate for gun control in the U.S.

The city's $128 billion pension funds hold nearly $14 million worth of shares in ammunition maker Olin Corp, $1.7 million in gun maker Smith & Wesson Holding Corp, $2.4 million in gun maker Sturm Ruger & Co Inc and $17,866 worth of stock in Brazilian gun maker Forjas Taurus SA.

Shares of Smith & Wesson fell nearly 10 percent, shares of Sturm Roger fell 7.7 percent, shares of Forjas Taurus fell 3.8 percent and shares of Olin fell 2.1 percent on Tuesday.

It wasn't just public pension funds who were questioning whether they should have investments in gun companies.

King Lip, chief investment officer for San Francisco-based wealth adviser Baker Avenue Asset Management, said has received calls from clients wanting to make sure that the firm did not own or buy shares in gun-makers or gun-related companies.

"This one has especially hit close to home for a lot of people. A lot of our clients have kids or grandkids," said Lip, whose firm has about $800 million in client assets under management. The firm does not own any gun-related stocks.

As outrage grew over the killings in Newtown, some gun retailers pulled rifles off their shelves. Wal-Mart Stores Inc, the world's largest retailer, took down an informational website about semi-automatic Bushmaster rifles.

Dick's Sporting Goods pulled all guns from its store closest to the site of the massacre, and suspended the sale of certain kinds of semi-automatic rifles from its chains nationwide. Cabela's however, continued to advertise the AR-15 type Bushmaster rifles on its website.

California Treasurer Bill Lockyer on Monday asked CalSTRS and the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) to account for their investments in gun manufacturers. Lockyer proposed that the state's public pension funds, the largest in the United States, sell their interest in any company that makes guns that are illegal under California's assault weapons ban. California's ban includes the Bushmaster rifle.

"We are not precluding the possibility of extending a divestment move to the retail sector, but right now we are focused on the source, which is the manufacturers," Lockyer's spokesman Tom Dresslar said.

KNEE-JERK REACTION?

U.S. lawmakers have not approved a major new federal gun law since 1994, and a ban on certain semi-automatic rifles known as assault weapons expired in 2004.

The Newtown killings have led President Barack Obama and some congressional leaders to reconsider what has been a largely hands-off approach to gun control in recent years.

The percentage of Americans favoring tough gun regulations rose significantly after the killings at the Connecticut school, a Reuters/Ipsos poll showed on Monday.

While the latest moves by investors could herald a new chapter in corporate America's stance toward the issue of gun rights, it remains to be seen if they will have lasting effects.

Several investors held firm about investing in gun-related stocks, seeing the debate more as a knee-jerk reaction to a tragedy. Vanguard Group Inc, the largest shareholder in Smith & Wesson, for example, said it was not in a position to meet what it called the "social concerns" of all shareholders.

Vanguard said in a statement it was "deeply saddened by the tragedy" but that most of its shares in Smith & Wesson and Sturm Ruger were held in index funds.

"All these stocks are getting hit, but ironically I think what we'll find is that traditional gun purchases will actually rise," said Timothy Ghriskey, chief investment officer of Solaris Asset Management in New York.

"People are scared, and there's a good slice of America that very much believes they have a right to protect themselves," said Ghriskey, whose firm has a small position in gun retailer Cabela's. Cabela's shares fell 5.9 percent.

A German fund manager, who focuses on "sin" stocks such as firearms, alcohol and gambling, said he was sticking with his recommendation to buy Smith & Wesson stock despite Newtown.

It's a terrible tragedy, he said, "but everyone who changes his investment strategy now should ask himself if he really is surprised. Didn't they read newspapers in the past?"

CERBERUS DELIBERATION

Still, investor outrage over the shooting was enough for Cerberus to decide to sell Freedom Group.

The firm's decision came late on Monday night, after executives deliberated on the impact of the shooting, according to a person familiar with the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity because the discussions were private.

The private equity firm, which was founded by Stephen Feinberg and William Richter in 1992, also has to be careful not to anger investors at a time it is seeking to raise up to $3.5 billion for a new buyout fund.

Feinberg's father, Martin Feinberg, is also a resident of Newtown, Bloomberg reported on Tuesday, citing an interview with him. Public records show a Martin Feinberg residing in a retirement facility in Newtown.

Cerberus bought firearms maker Bushmaster in 2006 and later merged it with other gun companies to create Freedom Group, which reported net sales of $677 million for the nine months ended September, up from $565 million a year earlier.

Cerberus filed for an initial public offering of Freedom Group in October 2009 but withdrew the registration in April 2011, without offering a reason.

"It's an unusual move by Cerberus but it was a terrible event, so they are responding to some of their investors who are teachers' funds. I'm sure they will be selling it at a low price because now would not be a good time to sell the business," said Steven Kaplan, a University of Chicago finance professor.

Tue, 18 Dec 2012 22:46:08 -0800 Senate GOP objects to considering FISA bill, calls for vote on House version http://igyriip.posterous.com/senate-gop-objects-to-considering-fisa-bill-c http://igyriip.posterous.com/senate-gop-objects-to-considering-fisa-bill-c

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) tried to bring up the bill reauthorizing the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), but a Republican objected.

?FISA, this is an important piece of legislation as imperfect as it is, it is necessary to protect us from the evil in this world,? Reid said on the floor Tuesday evening. ?We need to finish this by the end of the week.?

Reid wanted S. 3276 to be considered with a limited number of amendments, but Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.) objected and said he didn?t understand why the Senate couldn?t just pass the House FISA bill. He referred to a letter stating that the Obama administration supports the House-version.

Reid said his reason for the limited number of amendment was because of time constraints ? he wants to finish work on the bill before leaving for Christmas.

?I will continue to work on a path forward,? Reid said. ?But Christmas is not more important than this legislation. I hope I?m not offending anyone, but it isn?t.?

Reid said he believed the Senate would be on ?thin ice? if it waited to pass a FISA bill until after Christmas.

Tue, 18 Dec 2012 09:42:14 -0800 Refinish Your Antiques ? Satunet http://igyriip.posterous.com/refinish-your-antiques-satunet http://igyriip.posterous.com/refinish-your-antiques-satunet

AntiqueSometimes you may look around your home and think how old and outdated your furniture looks. It?s very true that we need to change up our environments every so often and redecorate, because it makes us feel happier and more comfortable in our homes. However, there is no need to give away those nice antiques simply because the look out of style. You could be making a mistake and costing yourself a lot of money in the long run.

You could always look for French polishers in York and get an estimate on renovating that old piece of furniture. It could be polished and shined, stripped and refurbished, or painted a funky color for a fresh new look. It would be a fun, creative project for you, and the result would be a one of a kind piece that is personalized to perfectly suit your d?cor. Since the cost of refurbishing is usually much less than purchasing new furniture (which is usually of much lower quality), it would actually save you money as you refresh your living space.
